How many shots per Gb?
I recently brought another camera (canon 1d mk II N) and was surprised by how few shots I got per card, and thought it would be useful if we (collectively) got some real world figures for how many shots you can get per Gb for a given camera in a real world situation (clearly the official figures are optimistic).
My suggestion is that we get figures per Gb for the range 100-400 iso (possibly what we all shoot at in most cases) for JPG and RAW for each camera. (Maybe create a sticky if enough people respond)
In the figures below I have take the size of the card - as reported in bytes (in windows XP), and then divided by the average file size of a shot (take as an average of 15 shots) taken as the size on disk (which in most cases is larger then the file size) the results are below together with the canon stated figures for the cameras all figures are for JPG
Canon 1d mk1 crop=1.3 ~ 4Mp shots per Gb=455 (set as max - default=~712)
Canon 1ds mk1 crop=1.0 ~11Mp shots per Gb=307 (set as default settings)
Canon 1d mk2 N crop=1.3 ~ 8Mp shots per Gb=194 (set as default settings)
Canon quote 278 shots for the 1d mk2 N per 1024Mb
Canon quote 376 shots for the 1d mk1 per 1024Mb
It was a surprise (to me) that the mk2 N files were larger then the 1ds ones, but were lower resolution at least in terms of pixels. It will be interesting to see the file sizes of the 5d
