Was just in Tesco and thought I'd buy a magazine. Is the market saturated with photography magazines or what?!

I had a hard time choosing, do I go for 'the best-selling' or 'Canon only', and most had some free cd of one kind or another.

Which do you buy and why?

There are too many magazines and its diluting the good journalists between them.

At the moment I don't have a preference, I used to like Photog monthly but since the editor changed I've gone off it. Prac Photog consistantly quite good. The others - nothing has made me want to subscribe.

I occassionally pick up an Am Photog but the adverts to articles ratio is poor for the money (especially if you buy it weekly)

Problem is nowadays that the mags are baged, so you really cant see what's in them . It does mean you have to buy them rather then spend 1/2 hour reading the bits you like.

Look on the covers and see if there is an article or feature you like. Then buy the mag. This way you'll probably get through most of the offerings in a few months. If you find one you like then stick to it. But don't ignore the others.

One magazine I can suggest you look at is Outdoor Photography. It's just had a new editor and a redesign. The other is Digital Photo Pro. Did a good hands on review of the D3 last month, and the 1Ds lll this month. Some good articles as well

Always liked Practical Photography and Photography Monthly. In fact, I've even had an article in Photography Monthly so that might make me a little biased. :)

Well I bought Digital SLR User Magazine today, I was interested to see a review of the Canon 450D even though I've just bought a 40D.

Most of the mags were offering a Photoshop tutorial cd of some kind. I found these were blocking a lot of the featured articles which was annoying. I can see myself buying a couple more photography magazines this month just to see what I prefer, but definitely not keen on What Camera

Pratical photography here too,

I subscribe to DPP and intend to subscribe to OP as well ( just haven't got around to it yet ) both good mags IMO.

I've been buying OP since it started and its great if you like looking at beautiful landscape pictures. But over a period of time you realise you're actually looking at more or less the same pictures over and over again! They seem to favour the same photographers (eg the Light and Land clique) and although some are really top league , many of them aren't. Its review articles often compare like with unlike and it seems to have become rather supoerficial - or maybe it always was....

However, I still keep on buying it!

I get Eos Mag free as I am a CPS member but don't buy any magazine regularly, plus my booksmarks folder "Photography" is packed with websites!

Why kill a tree when I can surf????? :D

Carl.

I like Photog Monthly. As has been said ***, there is a lot out there and I only buy if something in them is of interest to me. I'm the guy in Tesco that speed reads most of them!
