how many lenses do you own and how many do you regularly use?

ha ha. I use mine for portrait and wedding pics.

Oh and shooting the dogs :)

17-40 f4 L ......... used to be my most used
24-70 f2.8 L ...... brand spanking new and not even been fitted to my camera yet
70 - 200 f2.8 ..... it's a siggy, but I love it
400 f5.6 L ..........not had an awful lot of use as yet

Have 3 lenses, and use all 3 regularly! Mainly because I have zero overlap really:

Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
Canon 70-300 IS
Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro (o.k, so it overlaps the 70-300, but I use them for completely different things!)

I can't afford to spend money on kit and not use it! Reading this thread has made me more than a little jealous though!

Chris

Hmm, not sure this is a fair question I actually keep 3 lenses as a backup so they don't get used much (35-70 f2.8, 80-200 f2.8 and 18-70).

In my main bag I carry

24-70 f2.8 - most used at the moment
70-200 f2.8 VR - not really used in anger yet but will be later in the year when the booked work kicks in
105mm VR - used quite abit for my 52 project
50mm f1.8 - not used this year - but is a fab very low light lens.
10.5mm Fisheye - used pretty much exclusively for 360s

can i ask what folk use their 70-200s for? i know there must be a multitude of things but i hardly ever seem to pick up my 50-150 nice as it is

Pretty much the same as Ali B; Portraits, Weddings, and Events where frame filling people or dog shots are needed for sale.

I would normally use it on a Crop Factor camera too

Don't be - remember that some of us earn money from taking photos and ensuring we have kit available for backup is essential for us

Nikkor 70-300 stays on the camera 90%
Tamron 17-50 for around-the-place stuff 10%
Nikon 50mm f/1.8 for bokeh shots much less frequently [but if the camera's put away, I use it as a body cap...]

I'm just playing with my new D-Lux 4 here, and I can see it replacing the 17-50 easily. Plus I'm realising how heavy the camera is with the battery grip [my second, BTW - sold the first for a song before I realised it could fit the D90 and therefore command a higher price...]Keep an eye on the for sale forums in the near future!

Edit - the reason the Tamron doesn't see more action is the same reason the little Leica will replace it for me. It's a nice portrait lens, but most of the time I use it in situations where I'm controlled - indoors or at least in semi-private surrounds. The D*0/17-50 combo is a little wieldy for reportage type photography, and a little heavy for easy portability around on the 'off chance' of a shot. I used it outdoors the other week when I knew I'd see some pretty decent landscapes, but most of the time I've other stuff to carry [pushchairs, buggies, toys etc etc..]

4 Nikon ones with my D200 and I use all of them although I use 3 of them more than the other.

1 Lens with my D1x (although I can nick the odd one from the D200's bag)

I like reading these sorts of threads, it makes me put things into perspective.
I asked myself this particular question some time ago: which of my lenses get the most use? When I answered that question, the rest ended up on ebay. Not to fund any more purchases, but to lighten the bag. So, the ones that lost the battle were: the 18-55 kit of course, the Lensbaby 2.0, the Sigma 70-300 APO DG, and the 2x Teleconverter.

So, now I am left with 4 lenses plus the 1.4x TC, of which all of them get some use, but one gets the lion's share of my time.

My most used lens by far, is my 120-300, it practically lives on the camera.
The 10-20 comes second in usage. Yeah, I like working at the extremes.
I realised that I am lacking a good walkabout lens. When I'll go out and take the camera just in case, I take the grip off and put the 50/1.8 on and got myself a brilliant light camera to take with me.

Sometimes I use my very old Canon 35-105mm, which gives me surprisingly good results, and even though my camera bag has gone through a big clearance, I was reluctant to give it away because it is light, has a great range for my taste, and has acceptable IQ.

I'm quite happy with my setup now. Future purchases will be the long awaited 600mm/4L, when the prices get down, a 24-70/2.8 (thinking of the new Sigma one tbh), and the Sigma 30/1.4. Oh, and buy that 2X TC back, when I get the long prime.

I currently have three lenses, as per my sig, and I use all three :)

The 24-70 gets used the most. No doubt. It's a fantastic lens. The use the 80-200 for motorsport and street, with the odd use in landscapes when im observant enought to notice a nice distant scene. The 14-24 hasn't been used much since I bought it, but it replaced the 10-20 which was used for landscapes, cityscapes and once or twice for motorsport between events...

OK, mine are as follows:

Sony18-70 Kit lens - No longer used, sits in an old camera bag
Sony 75-300 - No longer used, sits in an old camera bag
Sigma 105mm Macro - Occasionally used for...erm...Macro. :D
Sony 50mm f1.4 - Was used as a back up when another lens was being repaired and probably only rarely used otherwise.
Sigma 50-500 - Used for Summer Polo and zoo trips
Sigma 24-70 f2.8 - Most used as everyday lens
Sigma 10-20 - Just bought
Sony 70-200 f2.8 - for general use when fast and long needed

So if I was to go full frame, the only lens I couldn't use would be the 10-20.

My line up is nearly identical to Fabs except my 50mm is the f1.7, I have the sigma 170-500 instead of the bigma and the minolta 100mm macro instead of the sigma 105. Even have the same lenses sitting in an old camera bag, also have a sigma EX 1.4 and minolta 2x teleconvertor. I've had the 10-20 for about 18 months now and love it.

My understanding was that you could use the 10-20mm on an A900, it would detect it was for a cropped sensor and alter the settings accordingly, giving you a similar result to that on a cropped sensor and not at the 24 million mp

I have 6 and regularly us 5.

24-70 and 70-200 get the most use

85 1.4 prime and 14-24 get about equal next, although I don't tend to use the 14-24 very much for wedding work.

50 1.8 stays on a back up body so I've got something useable in most situations quickly if I need it. I've also got an old nikkor 50 1.2 I don't use much

Hugh

Canon 17-40 f/4 L - My most used lens. Lives on the camera and I just love it!

Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 - Rarely used nowadays, though used to be my most used lens. Whether it's all in my head or not, but it just doesn't seem as sharp as my others. I also hate the way it changes length and it's just nowhere near as nice as what it used to be.

Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L - Not had this long, and it's kinda heavy, but I carry it everywhere. Have used it on almost every outing, and will probably continue to do so.

Moving forward, I expect to see myself replacing the Sigma with a Canon 24-105 f/4 L and a fast prime like a Canon 50 f/1.4 though this will not be for some time.

I am also looking to get lenseless shortly with either a medium format or large format pinhole.

17-85 EFS used a lot on the 40D
35-70 EF used a lot on EOS 1n
70-200 EF Used a lot on both.

I have 3, carry 3 and use 3 :D

Nikkor 18-200VR. This is my everyday walkround, ideas and "get the shot" lens. Not the sharpest tool I have in the kitbag but OK when stopped down to f/8 or f/9. Love it for it's versatility.

Nikkor 70-300VR. Zoo, birding, wildlife - anything that requires distance work (obviously). Well sharp up to 200 and only loses a bit of definition after that.

Nikkor micro 105VR. Macro and sometimes portraits. Sharpest lens I have.

Nikkor 50mm f/1.8. My portrait, street, and indoor lens - works very well for small gigs. Sharp and fast.

Nikkor 18-55. Stays with the D40x which is used when I want to go light. Suprisingly good for a kit lens that feels like it's going to fall apart when you twist the zoom.

Nikkor 55-200VR. Stays with the D40x and is used for riots, public disturbances or any situation where I need to be light on my feet, and when going wider than 55 means I'm way to close.

10-22mm I use a lot
85mm I use regularly
75-300mm I use a lot when at the zoo and needing more reach
30mm I don't use as much as I should but I do use it
18-55mm gets used for anything really between 40 and 75mm

my old 28-80mm kit lens from film days is there as a back up incase anything happens to my 18-55 and isn't worth selling

So I use 5 out of 6

70-200 f4
17-50 tam 2.8
nifty
55-250

use all of them, but selling one soon as i dont need the same focal length twice.

I have:

Nikkor 12-24 F4 (never used so currently on ebay)
Nikkor 35 F2 (use alot for street and candids)
Nikkor 50 F1.8 (used alot for street and lowlight stuff)
Nikkor 105 F2.8 VR Micro (Not used that much but invaluable when needed)
Sigma 24-70 F2.8 (general walkabout lens and is on my camera most of the time)

Been using my primes alot lately to learn to compose with my feet and i love them, the sigma is good when stopped down but a bit soft when wide open but it's great for studio work:thumbs:

Chris.

I have 6 and regularly use 5.

I keep considering selling the 10-22, as it's gone from most used to hardly ever used since I got the 5d. Only problem is, I can't afford a 16-35.

If the 16-35 is out of reach then why not try its predessor, the 17-35/2.8L. A solid, dependable chunk that would cost a lot less and may just get covered by the proceeds from your 10-20.

Bob

wayyy someone else with a 35 f2 :D

im tempted to have a play with a 24-70, might make a good walkabout lens

It's a good bit of kit, bought mine recently when jessops were knocking them out for £234 in their sale:D

Canon MP-E - lives on the camera
Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 - The IQ from this lens is excellent for such a low price lens.
Canon 70-300mm IS USM - Least used lens.

It's an interesting point. I'm slowly reducing my lens collection to a set that will fit in one bag. So, I've sold a 300/2.8, 400/5.6 and have a 70-200 for sale. That will mean I will only have 3 1/2 lenses (one is shared with Sue!)

They are:
24-105 - people, landscapes, etc (about 20% of what I shoot)
100-400 - wildlife when I am feeling lazy (I expect this to be about 25% of the time)
500 - for "proper" days out (it was used on over half my pictures last year)
150 macro - not used much but great when I want it

HMM!!! Wish I had not read this thread

I have 31 lens spread across 5 systems mixture of AF and MF + medium format.

I use most of them most of the time depending on what kit I take out, but it is the shorter focal lentgh ones that get the most use

10-22mm EF-S (maybe for sale)
17-85mm EF-S (maybe for sale)
24-105mm EF L f4 (treking & walkabout)
70-200mm EF L f4 (trekking)
70-200mm EF L f2.8 (motorsport)
300mm EF L f4 (motorsport & aircraft)
1.4x TC

and 2 bodies

Want a 300mm f2.8 and canon to make a 100-400mm f4

I have the perfect amount of lenses and use them all...I promise!

Currently got;
Sigma 10-20 - Take everywhere
Canon 24-105L - Take Everywhere
Canon 50 f/1.8 - Not been used for some months but so small and light it just stays in my bag
Canon 70-200L - Only take it when I know I'm going to need it...motorsport, wildlife etc
Sigma 1.4x Converter - only take this when I take the Canon 70-200

On order
Canon 16-35 MkII L - this will replace the 10-20 and probably become the everyday walkabout lens before I make the jump to FF

I have all bases covered with my setup and there are no focal lengths I'm missing. I would like a longer prime like a 300 sometime and change the Sigma TC to a Canon to make a 420mm but that's in the distant future.

DB

Well it's been a long haul getting there, but I'm pretty well where I want to be with lenses. I'm only really short of a superwide for a crop sensor, but I tend to use the 17-40L for that and shoot film anyway.

17-40L
50mm 1.2L
85mm 1.2L
70-200 2.8L IS
100-400L
180L Macro
300mm 2.8L IS
500mm f4L IS

The least used is the 70-200mm 2.8L IS, which just doesn't have the reach for most of what I do, but it's invaluable for it's speed when it fits the bill and the reason I resist little voices in my head telling me to sell it.

The 180L Macro isn't seeing a lot of use of late either, but it's down to me to make the effort to put that right, and it isn't eating anything in the meantime. ;)

Hum,

Canon 10-22mm
Canon 24-105mm
Canon 70-200mm F4
Canon 100-400mm
Canon 1.4x

the 70-200 is shared with my son who has a 400d with the kit lens 18-55

Depends what I'm shooting as to which lens I use.
Motorsport - could use all, Rugby tends to be the 70-200 or 100-400.
Walkabout lens is mostly the 24-105
Studio work is nearly always the 24-105.

I think I've got most covered but wouldn't mind the 70-200 f2.8 IS when the prices become normal again.

Five, not including telescopes. As to regular use, I would say two get weekly or fortnightly use, the rest say once a month depending on what targets are available. The Takumar 28mm gets the least use as I use it as a widefield "constellation grabber" and there aren't that many constellations which benefit from that treatment.
