Hi All,

I have a Canon 400D and have just replaced the kits lens with an EF 28-135mm IS. I have seen good reviews on here for the sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro and have seen a couple for sale second hand.

My questions are these; considering the focal range already covered by my new lens, is buying something that duplicates 70-135mm of that worth it?

Is it better to cross over the range of your lenses in case of problems at either end of the range or concentrate on ranges that you don't already have?

Eventually I would also like a wide-angle like the sigma 10-22mm and the canon 100m Macro.

Advice for a lens 'virgin' greatfully received. By the way, I cannot afford 'L' so please don't depress me by suggesting it :(

Don't really see a problem in overlapping it gives a bit more flexibility. My zoom lenses overlap from 15 - 30, 28 -135 and 100 - 400.

overlapping isnt really a problem but is the 70-135 lens sharper or faster than your 70-300 will be at that range. If it isnt whats the point with the overlap?

Normally the only overlap I would go for would be a prime within a focal length range of a zoom.

I have loads that over lap it's no probs.

Canon 24-105 f4 L IS
Sigma 24-70 f2.8 ex dg
Canon 17-40 f4 L
Canon 70-200 f2.8 L IS
Sigma 100-300 f4 ex dg
Sigma 150 f2.8 macro

i have the cannon 100 usm macro its fantastic i well recommend it. AS a macro or a prime work well for both :)

A question on this topic... when a single aperture is quoted on a lens name, what does it mean? For example 70-200mm F2.8. Is this 2.8 at the long end or the wide end?

Throughout the entire focal range. :) So its f2.8 at 70mm AND f2.8 at 200m.
