Yes
How many of you have done a photography course/ degree etc in relation to going pro?

Does it give you more omph! when getting work or is it all about the portfolio?

Just a little interested on a boring evening.....

me neither, but aint pro yet,

I'm currently doing a 2 year Professional Photography course, (1 year left) then I will be doing a Photography Degree concentrating on the Post production and printing / marketing side of things.

It gives you a better understanding of things and a superb amount of feedback on your own work. And the chance to use and understand equipment you would never normally use, I can say I have used a lot of stuff i learnt about studio photography to earn myself more money, I can say from my point of view its defiantly worth it, you never know everything so learning is the way to go in my opinion.

The most relevant info about portfolios I got was from working with a Fine Art Photographer, on his prints and mounting prints for exhibition and how to put a portfolio together for submission to get exhibitions, commissions etc.

mho, which course are you doing? Is it full or part time?

I'm trying to find some evening classes to get more experience with using studio equipment. I'd love to do photography as a full-time thing, but I doubt I'll ever get to that standard from evening classes, as well as doing my full-time job.

Hello I have been a pro for 16 years working on my own, and for 3 years before that i helped a pro out, who showed me the ropes. Tried to do a photography course 15 years ago but i only lasted 2 weeks, i found it so boring and basic. I new more then the teacher so i quit. About 6 years ago i did a photoshop course that was good.

I have no interest in going professional, but I've just completed the first year of an A level course (won't be doing the 2nd year as I'm emigrating :D).
The tutor is a pro photographer who has done lots of studio work for major designer/fashion lines. Learned lots about studio work (too tedious for my liking) which is not really what I'm interested in.
All of the course was film based which was quite interesting - the tutor said that the people he works for expect the shoot done on film but I can't understand why. He also teaches the degree course which is film based.

I've done an NCFE Level 1 course, I'm still waiting for the results.

Sorry but I didn't do it with the intention of going professional though. Just a general interest. Wanted to do a course in something I enjoyed for a change.

Still can't make up my mind whether to do year two or not.

I've been doing some red carpet type stuff recently. I've had no training. Neither have any of the other photographers that I speak to, including those working for getty images. Although I understand some jobs require qualifications before they'll even consider you (ie photographer for the police).

he likely does glamour / fashion shoots on medium format, which when scanned well still has greater resolving power than the 39Mpix hasselblad backs. If he's shooting them on 35mm I have no idea why his employers insist on film

I've finsihed the first year of a HND, and am looking forward to the second.
To be blunt I started the course simply to keep myself focussed on photography after my move to Cardiff, I didn't really expect to get much from it. The first month or so was pretty slow, but after that it really started to pick up. It's essentially not much more than a forum to discuss images with like minded people. Throw into the mix the aforementioned opportunity to try out loads of different equipment and styles of working and it makes for an interesting course. I'm probably going to wind up doing a degree, despite my initial doubts about academic education & photography.

I'm starting an MSc in Biological Photography & Imaging in September, which I'm really looking forward to. I have no idea if I'll end up trying to go pro though, but it should be a lot of fun, and the skills should be useful for adding a twist to a PhD or whatever I end up doing.

I did a year long City and Guilds course - taught me loads and gave me the confidence in knowing what I was talking about to both clients and to other photographers! I would suggest that having a bit of knowledge about running your own business is almost as important though - you might be taking the best photos out there, but if no one is paying you, or you end up doing work for peanuts, your career won't last very long.

no courses here, although I have been tempted in the past. I guess I am a pro as I make my living solely from my photography, don't necessarily feel like it all the time though lol.

If I was going to do any kind of course it would be one that deals with flash and medium/large format as that's where I want to go next......10x8 field camera for landscape stuff......

Am currently doing HND :D
