Just a thought. How do studio flash users trigger their studio flash ? I always used my Canon 10D and 5D cameras pop up flash that fires 2 flashes to trigger the studio flash using my gizmo. But having purchased a Nikon D90 I find to my horror that this camera fires 3 flashes from the pop up flash. So it was back to the drawing board to design another gizmo. This works OK now with the D90. It was just a thought that crossed my mind.
 
Should be one flash per group in Nikon CLS, maybe another if you are using TTL to do the flash metering and then a third from the pop up if you have the pop up actually illuminating as well.

If you want to cut it to two like Canon, turn off the TTL and to drop it to one, don't have the pop up actually illuminate.

Whats the issue with three quick pulses anyway???
 
Thank you, at last I have an answer to cut the pop up flash down to one. Not being familiar with Nikon, I was struggling a bit. Now I have to find out what cuts it down to 2 flashes.
 
Forgot to mention but with Canon, 2 flashes is all you get no matter.So I made this adaptor to fire the studio flashes on the second flash then along came D90 with its 3 flashes.
 
My D90 only flashes once when in commander mode. If you set the onboard flash to -- and just configure CLS group 1 leaving the others blank it should only fire the once.
 
Gets confusing this. Set my camera to commander mode, built in flash to -- . A and B to TTL, the onboard flash fires 4 times.
 
Probably its to do with TTL. If you have a studio setup, stick both remotes into one group, turn off TTL and just set all of your remote flashes to manual. Once the popup is turned off of emit and also disable TTL for that too, should be one small flash that triggers your two remotes.

Alternatively, sod it and buy some RF triggers. No flashing at all!
 
Bought an INTERFIT radio transmitter for studio flash today 41 quid. So with my adaptor costing about 10 quid to make, but not having the range. Why my D90 fires 4 flashes and not synching with the camera I know not. Most prob to tie up with the SB series flashguns.
