I think it fair to say that when going out into the big wide open, it's more likely you were going to be poo'd on by a bird than say an elephant, but does this mean every time you leave the house it's inevitable your going to get covered in bird poo?
You mention 'a single point of failure', with all due respect Byker, I think that's highly disproportionate - I've had one years error free service from the drive so far, yes it's basically a laptop drive and destined to give in at some point, but do the math, 6500 raw files at roughly 8MB per raw, I think you'll come to the conclusion that it's more than a lot on CF cards. I noticed that you mentioned you stick to Sandisk as they haven't failed you, me too and I'm the same with Seagate laptop drives.
At roughly £30 - £50 for a good quality hard drive like seagate etc, provided you have the nexto shell, you make a significant saving.
That being said, as soon as I notice any kind of suspicious behaviour from the drive, it's time to replace it. Just like a worn tire really.
This method works great for me and still does without error.

I have a basic UltraII 1Gb and am looking to get a few 4Gb CFs - which ones should I get?

I was going to use the price as a guide, but they differ widely and I don't need the best and want to avoid the worst...so is it a 4Gb Extreme III I need?

nothing wrong with ultra II but you may find the 4Gb cards better to use if you shoot a lot of large files - the extreme is faster but you will only see the difference when you shoot very fast (sports) or when you copy whole cards to the pc

sandisk make reliable cards at a good price - the only thing i use

I've had the Crucial ones for ages from when we used to just shoot JPEG at work. They're cheap and cheerful but I've never had one let me down yet. They're all at least 18 months old but still going strong.

I've moved onto the Sandisks since shooting RAW all the time. The Extreme's were a bit of a bargain off Amazon at around a tenner. May just keep buying these if they're going cheap – not worried about faster speeds.
 
3 x 4 gig Extreme III's for the D300.

It was not enough for a couple of days away last week, so picstop came to the rescue with another 2 x 4gig Extreme III's.

For the D80, I have...

2 x 2 gig Extreme III's
1 x 2 gig Ultra II
1 x 1 gig Ultra II
1 x 1 gig viking
 
on the subject of CF cards, and i know it's a little bit off-topic...

but is it true that the speed of the cards are only relevant in terms of how quickly the photos will transfer to your pc? ie, the slowest cards are still faster than the fastest camera????
 
No m8, it's just that some cameras in the past were a bit slow to write and were only usb1.1 capable. That said although most newer cameras have usb2 and write much faster to the card they are still slower than the faster CF cards out there. Imo the Sandisk Extreme III cards are fast enough to handle anything most cameras can throw at them.

Cards here 4 x 512mb old and slow
4 x 1mb
2 x 2mb
