How long have you had your camera?

Yes
Well, I thought this when I saw the Canon's launch of 1000D

These days new cameras are popping out every forth night or so, with features to tempt us to change our absolutely good camera for the new one. And why? Weren't you just yesterday happy with the pictures your 'old' camera takes.. and do you really need the drinks holder that the new camera features..:bang:

So, just a simple question :

How long have you had your current camera, and how long would you give it until you HAVE to change it?

To start, I have to say I've had my Canon 1D MKII since last summer. Right after I sold my 400d due to moving to do indoor sports photography.
And as far as I can see, I don't need to change my camera for a long time to come (unless it breaks).

Looking forward to hearing peoples views...

Well Ive had my 400d for about five months and am just about to buy a 1d mk1 once Ive got those I will probably only replace them as one breaks.

The 400d is a big enough megapixel for printing up stuff and the 1d has the awesome fps for sports stuff. Untill I can afford to buy a 1d mk3 (or two) that will just ahave to do!

I had the D80 (still do) for about 10 months before upgrading to the D300. But the D80 was my first DSLR and it wasn't until I was into photography that I could see what benefits an upgrade would give me. Now that I have a camera that more than suits my needs I probably won't upgrade until full frame becomes more affordable. And if it doesn't come down in price, I would probably upgrade again after about two years to make my D300 a second camera and so on.

I've had my 40D for about a month, before that I had a 300D for 2.5 years. Basicaly I needed, bigger buffer, more FPS and AI servo focussing, I was going to get a 30D but the £100 cashback meant the 40D was a better deal. I don't see me changing in the short term.

IVe had my 350d for almost 2 years it's my first SLR and i have no intention of changing it.

I've had my 20d since feb 06, no real reason to change it. I would like a better camera but I certainly cant afford it or justify it.

I've had my Z2 bridge camera for about 4 years, I don't know when I'll get to upgrade it.

Had the D80 for around 4 months nearly. My first dslr but would love the D300 for the use of high iso, however better glass is my priority.

I've had my current 20D for two years and my 5D for a year. I bought the 5D when I went on a studio seminar and saw the pics coming off Mark Cleghorn's 5D. Same position, same lighting yet the 5D blew my 20D away. I still have them both and although I have been tempted by some of the second hand 1D and 1Ds starting to appear I have not been able to convince myself that I will really get that amount of benefit from upgrading.

Unless someone wants to show me and wave a bargain 1D/1Ds under my nose that is! :)

I ain`t buying another body until they bring out the option of noiseless images. What are the odds on one or more of the manufacturers already having this technology but are holding it back to make more money out of us?

Or am I just suspicious.....:suspect:

to be fair we arnt really far fromthat with the new Nikon D3.

in answer to the OP

Ive had my D200 only a month now, will upgrade as and when ive got enough cash to spend on a D300 body. Not that im not happy with the D200, its a great camera, but we always want more!!!

I had my 10D for 4.5 years before some blighter nicked it, although I've got to admit I was looking at the 40D with lustfull eyes by that time :D

Got a 20D to replace it, and had that for about two months before procuring a 5D. Typically I'd say that as long as I'm pleased with the pictures the camera is turning out, I'm happy to keep it until it breaks, but the thought of a 5D MkII makes me check my bank balance in anticipation....

I bought a Fuji finepix F100fd 2 weeks ago it is broken already! Should have stuck with Canon, my G6 never went wrong and I swapped that for a 20d and that has been perfect for the last 2 1/2 years.

I have had my D70 the first DSLR for about 3 years, I would love a D3 but can see myself upgrading before the year is out to a D300 first until the D3 drops in price and then i would let my daughter get more involved with the D70 she is only 9 but loves to takes shots with it

i started with my 400d then upgraded to 40d which imo was worth the upgrade so now selling my 400d.

I've had my 350d since July last year. I bought new, regardless of the fact that the camera was several years old already.
I intend on keeping the 350d, and for my birthday in September I'll be asking for the Canon 40d :D

Had a 350D for about 18 months and a 30D for about hhmmmmmm 5 days.

I have made the mistake in the past by chasing technology and paying over the odds for the newest must have item and now I just refuse to do it.

Best thing to do is to feed off the technology chasers eg. when the 40D came out second hand 30D's where everywhere and cheap as chips so snap up a bargain

I've never thought of it like that...
I'm holding high hopes for a 5D MKII to come out though, because I really want a full frame camera for the kind of photography I do.
I honestly think my photography would benefit from a 5D.

i don;t know what i'd get when i upgrade, but i rekon it'll be another year or so. Only thing i don't like about the 400d, is the small amount of FPS it has. Ideally i want 5+ fps.

Keep your eye on the price and availability on used 5D's now and then look what happens when / if the mk II comes out.

Canon AE1 for about 3 years
Canon EOS 650 12 years
Canon EOS 10D 3 years
Canon EOS 40D 5 Months
May just get a Canon EOS 1D Mk2 next year for aircraft stuff, and keep the 40D for everything else as it is a great camera.
Dean:)

350D since Feb last year. Its a great camera and with the battery grip I have no problems with it.

Depending on my level of photography by the end of the year I may consider moving over to a 5D but have no inclination to change bodies now.

I had a second hand Canon D30 for a 16 months before replacing it with a 30D when they came out, about 2 years ago now.
I can't imagine upgrading it for another crop camera for years yet. That would take a sizeable increase in resolution or a killer feature that I had to have (can't think what that would be)

However, a full frame sensor intrigues me. Where a 5D MkII might leave things is something I'd have to think about.

Bought my 30D shortly after they were released, (spring 06 I think), so paid top dollar for it. Its taken me until last week to buy my first bit of L glass and now I can see what this camera can 'Really' do.

If I manage to get hold of the 'ever growing' list of lenses by the time the 50D is released I may well look at that. If not, I'll keep what I've got!

i would change every 2 years

Why?

Had the 40D for about 6 months and unless they bring out a camera that comes complete with talent I don't see me needing to ugrade it for a loooong time!

My Zenit E and EM I've had since the 70s and my Canon A1 from 79, my Canon 50e since 97. I got my 350d in 2006 and the least reliable out of all my cameras I must say. The Canon 40d gets picked up from Jessops tomorrow. £629.99 less the summer35 code for a £35 discount so £494.99 with the cashback. Bargain ;)

Had my 300D for a year and a half.
Three weeks ago I replaced it with a 400D, that lasted a whole 3 days and I went out and bought a 30D and sold the 400D.

I imagine the 30D will last about another year and a half

Had my Nikon f60 for 3 years, before part trading it for the D200 I had saved for. Had the D200 for a matter of months before selling it off again...needed the money and I just found it awkward in my hands... now awaiting a Canon 40D. If I do not get on with that, it will be the D300 and whichever of those I get, I shall be keeping and simply acquiring a second body.

Glad to hear you are getting a new camera Alby. Looking forward to seeing your new photos again. I know you'll enjoy it.

Bought secondhand D60 (1st SLR) in Jan 2005 and added a 20D in Sept 2005, The wife has had her 300d (1st SLR) since May 2005 and a 30D in July 2006.

I will not be repacing any until they break

Thanks Barbara I'm sure I will, I can't believe I never felt the need for a new camera after the A1 but it was such a brilliant camera for it's time and I still enjoy using it now.

I have had my D3 for exactly 1 week now, and need to sell my D300 before the credit card bill arrives!

Had my 1Dmk1 for around 2 years now, just not impressed enough with most cameras to consider changing.
The 40D, 450D and their ilk are just toys in comparison with nothing like the AF capabilities. Had a look at a 5D, and whilst it clearly had better detail, it was only when cropped that it was obvious, and pretty much everything else about the camera was worse (excluding the battery life).

I think I'll need to move to a 1DSmk2 to make me feel like I've made a genuinely worthwhile change, and they're nothing like sensible money.
