How is your kit insured

Yes
Just curious really. Do you have specific insurance for your kit or do you rely on your general house contents insurance?

Search 'insurance' for about a million threads debating various insurance companies. If you don't shoot professionally, either photoguard or contacting your home insurers and asking them what is or isn't covered is by many accounts the best way of doing things.

Household for me.

I use household, but you need to tell your insurer that you want cover for accidental damage and theft when your kit is in the house or out with you.
Your insurer will question you as to the use of your kit and it's value etc.

Photoguard for me - my household insurance company (the last one anyway) would only cover my kit (and stuff like my watch) as long as I didn't take it out the house....:shrug:

I went with photoguard, purely on researching through this forum

Household here too.
Started a new policy today and as usual I made sure to ask for clarification as policies have a max value per item and like to ensure a camera and a lens is 2 items even if lost as one :)
Again as usual the household will not cover if stolen from an unattended vehicle. Nice of them to tell me to make sure I say it was elsewhere if claiming :schtum:

I'm not looking for a list of insurers ;). Im just curious about the ratio of the two options suggested or in fact if some don't bother to insure at all.

You'll need to watch that. If your kit gets stolen you must report it to the police and insurance will check that. If you start giving fairy stories to the police you are asking for trouble.

My insurance does not cover kit left unattened in a vehicle and it is not something I'd do.
Camera plus lens are treated as two separate items on my insurance (Nationwide).

I went with Natwest for my home insurance, again not covered in an unattended car. 2k single item limit, and camera and lens are separate.

Anyone know why photoguard's taken the amend policy function off their website?

I've been looking at the Photoguard website and despite it receiving an award for the website design, I find it incredibly difficult to navigate and actualy find any policy details.

The photoguard website system only works on internet explorer, because that's obviously the only browser in the world...

M&S home contents covers the lot in and out of the home. I only need to specify items over £4,000 in value and my photo gear is classed as separate items, so I don't need to specify anything. They don't even want to know the total value to be covered. The policy has no limit. My total annual premium for buildings and insurance is around £300. When I got a quote from Aaduki for amateur cover only they wanted around that for my camera gear alone.

Household insurance similar to a few of the above. Covered in and out of house and for accidental damage. Not covered if left unattended in a vehicle. Lens and body count as separate items so no need to list specific individual items. With Morethan iirc

On the household insurance, I have a special extension to the policy, it is not automatically covered.

Mines specified on the household insurance too, as are my shotguns and metal detectors. i'VE ONLY HAD TO MAKE A CLAIM ONCE AND DID SO WITH NO PROBLEM.

Bloody caps lock!

My kit is insured through my home & contents.
However due to my line of work I have my isurance through a company that deals with the armed forces.
my camera kit is all insured, all risks, anywhere in the world even on ops.
with one caveat- not for professional use, so if it gets damaged on a paid shoot I am not covered!
I am in the process of starting out doing paid work, Aaduki seem to be quite well regarded, if you call them they will include things like covered in the car overnight etc, also has public liability and professional indemnity., my quote was £345 per annum, with 9K of kit, 8k out of the house in the car, so not too bad imo

I have buildings and contents insurance with Nationwide. I added my camera kit in December 2009.
£6k worth of kit
New for old cover.
Damage and theft cover.
Max of £4k worth of kit out of the house at a time.
Cannot be left unattented in a vehicle.
£1 million public liability cover.

Cost - just under £10 per month (no reduction for paying anually).

I don't know if premiums vary according to postcode.
