SO.... there is this event/nightclub photographer whos style i LOVE. its not for everyone however. i think the effect is something you either love, or hate.

first. here is the link to one of her photos on FlickR.... then comes my question.

How could she possibly get such a good quality HDR effect in this environment. I know enough to know it would be impossible to take multiple exposures without getting a huge amount of movement from the DJ. she has other similar photos with crowds of people. but just as crisp. to me, Tone mapping a single image is the only way she could have done it. maybe with some crazy good plugins.... but even then, there is barely any noise in the image or anything.

Just wondered what anyone else thinks. maybe someone more experienced in this type of HDR effect etc. thanks.

Simple one shot, then import into lightroom and make three shots out of it by changing the exposure, then go to photomatix and combine them.
But it might not be that - just been playing with clarity and contrast sliders etc in LR, I've seen results similar to this just using LR. In fact her exif data is intact so I'd go with LR only

But that's two ways to achieve the same result

The 5d3 is pretty good noise wise even at 6400 iso. I'd be tempted to email the photographer and ask her (her emails in the exif)

It could also be lucis art filter, or Topaz adjust - or just clever manual adjustment and layers.

IMO opinion a good quality HDR photo should barely be noticeable as HDR (but each to their own i guess ;))

To me that shot is a horrifically overcooked HDR shot

But as said, you can do HDR shots using a single expose, i know Photomatrix allows you to use a single shot to create HDR photos

It is possible to 3 shot bracket in situations like this, I had a good example in my flickr, (which i deleted about a month or so ago) and as I'm on my laptop I've not got access to my back up disc with it on :(

Basically you can just do a normal HDR and use the anti ghosting feature (sometimes you need to close in from the original in parts) etc,

So yes you can do a 3 shot (or even more) as long as your prepared to sort the movement out in post

That said I think this is a 1 shot heavily worked on in lightroom, shot on a 5dmk 3, with a EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Shot at 16 mm.

I would also guess they used settings around Program AE, 1/30 sec, f/2.8, ISO 6400.

Process wise as well as lots of brushed in adjustments I think they have pulled the highlights down...say i dont know around -77 and upped the clarity to +100, and set the white balance to approximately say 2050 Tint -150

Fairly heavy noise reduction at i would guess 50?

They also didnt convert the colour space to sRGB and left in adobe which isnt great for web viewing.

PS I absolutely definitely positively or maybe didnt look at the exif data ;)
