How Is This HDR Done..??

My bad, i will rephrase the question....wtf is DRI..??

At a guess, going from his tags, Dynamic Range Increase.

It looks like he's blending multiple exposures using Photoshop.

Great shot – almost looks like one of those hyper-realistic Photoshop illustration pieces.

I've only dabbled with a demo of Photomatix but it didn't float my boat. You can get just as a good an affect using Photoshop and layers/layer masks function but it definitely takes more time... but it's worth it. :)

He didn't use Photomatix. I already said its not hdr.

so he's got the different shots and just altered the blend mode between each?

Question - perhaps for Pete, can you have HDR without tone mapping, or visa versa?

I'm sure its ye olde technique of exposure blending. Not changing the blend mode in PS. You always have HDR without tone mapping. Tone mapping is where you compress the HDR down to LDR so you can see it on your low contrast ratio display.

Lurch,

This is a great site for learning photoshop basics.

This might help with layer blending also.

I think Digital Photo had a tutorial on its Spring 2008 DVD about using layers to take specific parts of an exposure and blend them to make a better shot. It was basic but very useful.

Thanks Pete, so anytime we see an HDR on the internet it isn't HDR but in fact tone mapped to LDR. The only time we would see HDR is with our own eyes.
