I was recently reading an article on rapper Eminem. I noticed the photography for this article was very striking. I am very new to photography, so could someone please tell me what camera type, filter, render, effect etc. was used to create this image?

Thank you,

Macre.

Fairly new myself but its took with some sort of a wide angle lens, kinda looks slighty hdr and some vignette on ps maybe, probs a few layers built up to make the final edit?

Unless the exif is still intact (which I've not bothered to look at) it would be impossible to say what kind of camera was used. As this is a photo of Eminem then I'd image it'll be a very expensive one held my a famous celeb photographer.

As for the processing, it looks like it has some HDR in there but maybe not as the very high end cameras have a higher dynamic range than you or I would be used to. The lighting seems to have come from either side of the photographer with the stronger lighting from the right (casting a stronger shadow on the left as we look).

I don't think there has been anything exceptional done to create this image.

Thank you very much both of you. You both mentioned HDR which is what gives the image the particular property I was enquiring about. I appreciate your help.

If you look at the figure you'll notice one possibly two shadows. This gives me the feeling that he was illuminated with a couple of snooted flashes, plus the foreground may have had some additional light on it.

I can't see any HDR in that, just a straight underexposed ambient lighting with two snooted flashes as you say - the PP is probably mostly dodging & burning and tinkering with levels here & there, with a vignette too

Pretty simple shot really, made all the more interesting by the venue and subject rather than any fancy 'effects' :)

I'd guess that there's probably some Lucis filter applied to this after the application of a ton of on-set lighting. Look at some of Dave Hill's stuff (I don't mean the bloke out of Slade, though)

I think there is more flash at play then meets the eye. there is a third shadow infront of the subject, and the buildings look like they are lit with flash too

In essence, this is shot by a Pro, who knows what they are doing. If the OP wants an insight to the individual techniques shown, have a look at the strobist website - www.strobist.com

wow I didnt expect that much CGI. At least the pics were taken using Canon 1 series:thumbs:
