how important is a 70-200 2.8 (for weddings especially)

hi all, currently bricking it about a wedding i'll be covering in france at the weekend, and also about a couple of sports events i have coming up next month.

All the big pro wedding togs seem to have the 70-200 perennially attached to their cameras and i'm starting to fret that the longest lens i currently have is an 85 1.8 (this could go on my d90 to make it ~120mm).

So please, regale me with success stories of shooting weddings without the 70-200...i can do it, right?? :)

p.s i do have a 24-70 / 50mm / 11-16

I don't think i have time to consider hiring one now. :bang:
 
Its as important as your use of it. I think you will see people on here swaer by them and then others don't use them at all. Its all about your style of shooting and the venue!
 
Personally I won't ever own this lens. I had a 70-200 f/4 but I decided to sell it and instead concentrate on primes.

Nothing against the lens as everyone knows the mark 2 is as good as zooms get but the size and weight just make it a no go for me.

I'll be doing a wedding with 3 primes next month although my longest is 135mm
 
It all depends on your style and the venue. My last 2 weddings were done with the 24-70 and 12-24. I don't think I used my 70-200 at all.

I havent used my 70-200 only the once on the 3 weddings I have done this year. I have predominately used a 24-70 F2.8.

Pretty sure you'll be ok, if really worried why not look into hiring one for piece of mind??
 
thanks guys, the responses have somewhat put my mind at ease. I'm just rather nervous as i've been thrust into this and wan to do the best i can.

I'm considering have the 85 on my d90 for longer shots (as i won't have to raise the iso quite so much at 1.8 to 2.5 for example) and keeping the 24-70 on my d700.

then swapping to the 50 1.4 / 11-16 at certain times.
 
The 24-70 is a good choice but as others have said it depends on what kind of location you are shooting at.

If you can get quite close to the bride and groom then great, if not then you may struggle a bit to get the shots you want.
