I'm thinking about posting my images on Flickr, but what I want to know is how good is it and what are the benefits of using it?

:)

depends on what you want to get out of it.. I wouldnt touch it with a barge pole myself.. but other people have different needs and find it great... If you want it to remotely host pics for your own website I would say better options... If you want a community then maybe useful..

Seriosuly.. depends on what your needs are IMHO

I only use it for hosting pics I want to link to here. A lot of theft off it too from what I hear.

watermark watermark watermark!

stops from pinching and reproducing..But i changed my watermark a few weks ago.. within days pics appeared on facebook with big bold letters accross the middle "STOLEN FROM KIPAX.COM" complete waste of time :(

by sounds of it not very good then, unless you watermark the images

but then thats the same for hosting anywhere online

very true, flickr sounds like "facebook" for photography, I'll have a look into it and then decide

:)

I use Flickr for fun really and have not thought about people stealng my photographs.

I don't even watermark, but I might start....

As said above, depends what you use it for. If you like to have loads of spangley banners and “great pic” comments regardless of proper critique than join in with the group community. I’ve done it and now really really hate it. I just use it to host my pics now.

I do enjoy looking at a handful of my contacts pics though, even if I don’t comment. It’s also great for searching for new locations, which can be very helpful.

I use it for hosting pictures to send a quick link to someone with photos of them when I'm letting them just copy to their facebooks etc. this is obviously only mates and close family that use it for that.. otherwise I put random photos on there and see what others think of some of my work.

It's great if you want to share with family/friends or if you want a massive ego boost.

There's no such thing as crit on there, it's all 'great shot' and suchlike, a shame really as it could be so much more than that.

I use flickr for hosting my shots, then post them here for c&c. You tend to not really get much useful crit on flickr (although I've got some decent comments in the past, I seem to be in the minority!), most of it is "YOU'VE BEEN AWARDED A GOLD STAR, NOW PLEASE SPAM THE HELL OUT OF OTHER PEOPLE'S SHOT TOO AND ADD YOUR PHOTO TO OUR GROUP" type comments :D

But if you have btinternet, register with your bt e-mail address and you get freee unlimited hosting, which is why I use it anyway.

Not too sure about that? You just need to post to the right groups if you want decent critique and you have to participate with the group ... same as here really

For me, Flickr is a fantastic pool of inspiration. I use it for hosting my photos, and for sharing with people, but also getting feedback and exposure on my work. Mostly though, I use it for the inspiration, and groups, as there is a lot of very useful information on there.

I dont post in the groups that want you to post 1 and comment on 5 etc, they do your head in.. its enabled me to have photos selected by getty.. one sale so far.. wooo!

there's good and bad on it.. I guess you get what you want out of it really :)

No matter where you host images watermarks are the way to go.

Only the heaviest Java can make downloading images at full res difficult and with the likes of flickr being the weakest link of any including that useless POS space-ball nonsense I'd stay well clear.

As for all those leaches giving golden stars and jug ears in recognition of what makes their group look better by you contributing, give me a rest.

Participating in a crap party is one thing but when you can laugh at them from a window its all the better. That is if your name isn't Tom.

i love flickr i've learnt allot from there .i've got more response from Flickr than i have of other sites

there are still some great togs there, but mostly it's rubbish with all the "awards" and pointless coments. I use it only for image upload and very rarely to look at some specific lenses pictures or stuff like that.

I only use it to share pictures between friends and family and for that it's great. None of my input is for public access and the fact that my friends and familiy can print off whatever they like without me being involved is great. As for anybody stealing anything more fool them.

I use flickr because everyone else here does. I find the whole interface a bit clumsy and some parts are slow or counter-intuative. If all you need is somewhere to upload your images to it's fine but don't expect much more. It's also completely useless for any type of critique. Everyone just says "Nice shot" and that's your lot. There's also an awful lot of family snaps and things that get uploaded so it's not the best source of inspiration unless you're looking amongst quite specific groups.

Cheap storage for jpgs and the rest has been said. I keep most of my shots private now due to unauthorised use. I also use it to host for one of my websites and on here.

cheers for the replies

I will start a flickr page, but only for photos I don't care about

You can set them private so others can't see them as I said or just allow your friends or family have access to them.
