Just flicking through the book 'Digital Photography Visual Quick Tips' and a picture stood out.

There's a picture of a guy wearing hip waders in a pond with his camera mounted on a tripod taking a picture of a Water Lily!!!:bonk:

So folks made me think, how far have you gone to get the shot you wanted?

I'd go that far without a doubt. Benbo tripods have sealed legs in the bottom sections so you can stand them in water for just that purpose. Other situations would depend on the degree of risk to my favourite person. :D

One of my daftest was at Scarborough Castle only last year.

It was a club trip very early in the year and absolutely freezing cold in a high wind, one of those winds that makes you cry as soon as you look into it! :'(

I walked clockwise around the grounds snapping as I went, and finally came to the huge ancient wall looking down over the bay. None of the holes were in the right place for the killer shot over the bay, so with my D2Xs in one hand, I climbed this ancient crumbling wall one-handed to a height of about 12ft and could still only just see over the wall. As I couldn't go any higher, I turned the camera up-side-down to see through the viewfinder and get the lens over the wall, with tears streaming down my face I rattled off a few shots safe in the knowledge no-one else would have those shots from our club trip (who else would be daft enough!:cuckoo::cuckoo::cuckoo:)

I managed to climb about 6ft back down and then had to jump!

A few secs chimping proved it was worthwhile, and I felt suitably impressed with my efforts :thumbs::thumbs:

50 yards later I came to a huge viewing platform that had been built to let people look and photograph over the wall - so everyone had got the shot and without risk :bang::bang::bang:

DD's Top Tip - unless the light is going fast - reccy the place before you start shooting, the best & easiest spot may be just yards away

As they say in First Aid Courses, always inspect the environment around you for risk's before getting stuck in !!!

Daftest so far would probably lying in the middle of a race track to get just the right shot of race cars comming through a chicane.

It was worth it as the shots were good and I'm still here to tell the tale. Could have done without the drivers trying to see who could get closest to my head without squashing it like a melon.

I live in Camberley and am going to Brighton on Sunday. That's quite a long way...

:D

Not sure you've truly grasped the gist of this thread Mart61 :lol::lol:
That simply has to be the most quirky, top class, brilliant post of the decade...:lol:

Brilliant Dave... just brilliant...

In the past I have stood in places on car rallies...to get a photo that nobody else had ! It was very silly and dangerous and in 10 years of taking photographs from rally events I had 3 near misses and one of them I should not be here writing this post !

Thanks,

Paul

How far would I go?? Do you not appreciate the lengths I went to on Sunday? Have you not seen the Intrepid Chronicles threads? I went out round london, in the dark and the rain, with 4, yes FOUR male members of the Talk Photography Forum, I mean, hows that for dedication to your art in the face of imminent danger? :suspect:

I feel so humble in the presence of greatness :D

I remember now doing a rally too - I moved ever closer to the action on a corner at about 3.00 a.m. in Dolby Forest when my film ran out (yep so long ago)

As I went back to get more film, the very next car overshot and went right over where I'd been stood - the few snappers near me gave me a look of 'Lucky [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER]' or some such - I reloaded, but didn't go back

Why? ..... Was it your round at the bar? ....

I have only ever taken shots out of the car window as i cant be arsed with all the health and safety these days, so not that far really. ;)

When I venture out of the car with my camera, I always make sure that I have assessed the situation I am going into.
First of all I fill out a "Risk assessment form" so i am aware of any dangers when taking photos.
I then fill out a "Method statement form" which will tell me how i am going to take a picture in a safe manner.
Then I have to fill in a "COSHH assessment form" to make me aware of any dangerous substances i may come into contact with.
Once i have filled in all the Health and Safety forms, i then Check all my camera equipment to make sure its safe and is being used for the purpose it is designed for, and not faulty. I then spend 30 minutes putting on my protective clothing.

After doing all of this, I normally turn around only to find the suns gone down and i've missed the shot!!!!!!!! :bang:

LMAO

If I were to guess, I would say you are in the building trade, possibly as a management role/site foreman.

I once stood in the middle of a very busy Champs Elysses in Paris getting the classiv light trails / Arc de Triomphe combination!!

But perhaps the most dangerous thing I have ever done is venture into Sunderland to get some shots of Roker Pier ;)
