I got a 100-400 and love it. However it is massive and is a bit of a pain to carry around everywhere. So I thought I would keep it and use it for when I was happy to carry it around.

Someone is selling a 75-300 in the classifieds, so I wanted to know how they compare. For a lighter smaller lens with slightly less reach will it work well?

Thanks

I bet it compares very badly, although I never tried one.
I also bet a 55-250 is milles ahead (of the 75-300). :)

I thought as much. I suppose that it's £75 as apposed to over a grand for the 100-400. No snobbery intended, as sometimes price isn't everything. I wasn't bothered about build quality if it took great photos.

However - I am just a bit embarrassed with the 100-400 as with the lens hood on, it is really quite massive. But it does take some nice photo's.

I really don't want to spend a lot of money, on something which is just a bit smaller than what I already have. So I might just stay stuck.

What about a 70-200 f4L? Small and light yet produces fantastic images, used they run around the £350 mark

Thanks - I havn't seen one in person. I was after something that does not stand out. So it could be worth a shout.

I did consider the 70-200 f2.4 IS when I was looking for a bigger lens. However I didn't think it would have the reach, and combined with a 2 times teleconverter started looking expensive for a newbie like me.

I'll go to a shop and have a look at one in reality. However what I am really after is a comparison between size, cost and conspicuousness.

Instead of the notorious 75-300 the far better 70-300 IS might be worth a look. Despite now having the L version I've kept my non-L since it definitely has it's uses at times and I've had some excellent results with it.

I haven't used the 100-400, but the 75-300 wasn't good for me. Didn't feel right to use compared to the 55-250.
