i've read sigma 10-20 being a good wide angle lens on a budget, how does the tamron 11-18 stack up?

also how much should a used/ second hand one cost ?

any opinions of the tamron 11-18?

I used to have one, really nice lens - I know that David Kilpatrick who you'll see around on the Dxyum and DPReview Sony forums much prefers the Tamron.

The issue (at least in Nikon fit) is the slow focus. Its also expensive and the focal length is a bit limited compared to the others.

However the colours are superb, and it does an awesome job of sky colours. Very sharp too.

Here are a few that I definately know I used the Tamron for:

You can see several images from this lens here, generally used on a Fuji S5 Pro:

TBH optically I've always found Tamron lenses are better than Sigma - however in this case, due to the price differential I'd probably go for the Sigma.

thanks

i was looking a used lenses.

think i saw the tamron 11-18 new at sub £300, while the sigma 10-20 was over £300 new
the sigma, gives more focal range though.

so roughly how much do these go for used?

puddleduck, those waterfalls are ace, what sort of setting are they on?

Your'll be lucky to get a 10-20 used, no one wants to sell it. It's an amazing lens.

...I now own Puddleducks Tamron. It will be one of the last lenses I will part with.

These wides take some getting used to - you have to be real close and properly compose the shot unless you want a lot of pavement or sky. You get a fair chunk of barrelling also.

Loads of fun...no experience of the Sigma.

out of interest how much was the tamron from puddleducks?
if you don't want to post on here, a PM would be appreciated

There's also the Tamron 10-24 to consider, I had a quick try of one in Jessops and at 10mm it didn't seem anywhere near as prone to converging verticals as the Sigma

If I remember - as Chris (Tulipone) and I are near neighbours he got it for an excellent price, I actually can't remember the figure - however I do know you won't get either a Tamron 11-18 or a Sigma 10-20 for anything close to what mine sold for.

The going rate for either nowadays is £250+ used I suspect.

Its a very very nice lens, with some glorious colours - I am not sure how, but skies look like you've used a polarizor even when you haven't.

I sold mine when I got wind of the Tokina 11-16 and the Tamron 10-24. Ironically as I've now gone exclusively full frame I never got to use any of these!

I've used all 4 of the major wide angles, and the Tamron is WAY up there optically, albeit with a compressed range.

Here are a few more, all shot out-of-the-camera JPG, no PP (just shots around Cambridge)

It did very well in my "in the sun" flare test shots. The Tamron doesn't give up anything optically to the Sigma 10-20 at all.

Sorry to be picky, but converging verticals has nothing to do with the lens brand. It is purely related to camera to subject distance, and angle of view. Do you mean distortion?

...thankfully Andy has done me a couple of deals. TBH I cannot remember what he let me have it for, I am sure it was good.

I have not found the Tamron slow to focus, possibly because of the checking of composition that bit more, but I am sure Andy is correct. Getting lines to work is a challenge, but I love using the lens. I had a good example of a mosque in Turkey, unfortunately now deleted.

I was standing maybe a foot away from the menu board - you need to get close! Added the picture of the pub to enforce the polorized effect. No CP was used with.

thanks, just what i was looking for, especially the " shot out-of-the-camera JPG, no PP " as i don't have good access to photoshop etc.
