How do you.... use a flash on a tripod as a studio light?

Flashgun, flash stand or tripod, remote trigger/receiver(s) and light modifier of choice. You may need a brolly adapter to sit under the flash to give hold your chosen modifier.

If you work through the Strobist 101 Dave Hobby takes you through using off-camera flash (or Google "Strobist").

If your flash has a stand with it most have 1/4" thread on the underside, your tripod should have either a 1/4" or 3/8" thread on it. If it's a 1/4" just screw the two together, if it's a 3/8" one you'll need a small adapter to convert the larger tripod thread down to fit the smaller one on the flash stand.

If you're off-camera then you're probably using a trigger. The RF-602 and CT-301P receivers (amongst others) have a standard tripod socket on the bottom.

Nikon AS-19 foot; features a screw thread in the base that sits on the tripod head, then you can just slide a flash into one of the three coldshoes. Main problem is if you want to use modifiers, but I'm sure there's an easy fix :)
