I was just wondering how you store your files, by that I mean when you acquire from camera where do you save and view, then where do you store any edited versions I am currently putting everything in my pictures under years then subfolders for each event.

I pretty much do as you do, using Lightroom to keep everything searchable and storing virtual versions for editing.

Very important is also to keep a backup - I have two - one to a local NAS drive and one online - for £12.50 a year (unlimited) it's essential and cheap!

Do you keep the edited versions in the same folder ?

If I edit them in Elements and re-import them to Lightroom it goes into the same folder by default. Most things I edit in Lightroom so actually nothing changes on the original file - lightroom simply remembers all the editing steps and applies them - you can go back to the original at any time.

I am just an enthusiast so my process won't be as advanced or sophisticated as some but here it is:

I don't tend to store me shots by year/month/event, i tend to do it by style of shot landscape/architecture/etc and the first folder will just be a dump folder where i stick the shots i've taken, then there are subfolders called 'processed' and 'original files'. If I like shot i've taken i move it to 'original files' folder for editing. Once i've edited the shot I save the final version into 'processed' and I upload to flickr from there.

If after a while I haven't edited some of the ones in the main folder I will usually delete them, or if I don't like them on first view they get binned.

I currently edit using ViewNX2 and GIMP although I'm going to buy Elements with Christmas money so my process might change.

I also back up to a memory stick using a briefcase that i can sync with, and I also create a copy on the computer at work periodically. That way I usually have 3 versions of any one shot in 3 different geographical locations so I should be able to get any photo back if i get a corrupt file or whatever.

I tend to have a master folder with sub folders of the date in that

eg Motorsport.......... BSB Oulton Park March 2012

Can vary slightly, but on the whole works for me

I use sessions in Capture One, that means each shoot goes into its own folder, within that folder there is all the original raws, then an output folder with the finished TIFFs for archive, also a session file which keeps track of all the edits etc.

It means that I can move a folder to another location and keep it all together.

I use Media Pro to catalogue all my files, I can search by keyword, location, date, camera, whatever I need really.

I have just bought a new 2TB HHD for photo storage and I am running PSE10 at the moment I import from the organizer which I can tag from there then save edits in new folder. Would you do the same or view & delete in the master folder before exporting to editing software.

I use lightroom for my raw file storage and catalogue.

I have sub folders for the major headings based on what I shoot. So Music, Motorsport, Dogs, Birds, Landscapes etc. Then depending how far I want to drill down I may divide them up further.

At some point in the drill down there may be a date... so for live music I have a 2012 folder, and the sporadic efforts before then are just in 'pre 2012'. For my own dog I have a yearly archive - same with any other single subject I shoot a lot.

Works for me, even if it does sound chaotic...

A little off subject but Does anyone know where the .xmp files keep appearing from and what do they do because they don't open.

One thing I like about raws is that all the edits are saved within the raw itself so no need to saved "edited" files externally.

Er, no they aren't, the raw file is never touched. The adjustments you make are kept as a recipe in an XMP sidecar file;

A little off subject but Does anyone know where the .xmp files keep appearing from and what do they do because they don't open.

which tells the raw converter (Capture One, Aperture, Lightroom, ACR etc) how to process the file, how much saturation, contrast, exposure adjustment etc to give it.

All of my pictures are stored in two folders within "My Pictures"; One folder for edited and one for unedited (master) files which I then sync with two folders on secondary hard drive. For added backup, I image my entire C drive (system and personal files) about once a month using Acronis to my secondary hard drive.

Any image that I work on is opened\saved to & from "My Pictures" on my C: drive and then backed up accordingly.

A little overkill I suppose but I got punished not too long ago for fiddling about with my RAID array.... Never want to be in the situation again where I'm staring down the barrel of losing everything personal to me.

you can never be too ott when it comes to your photographs 3 sources minimum I would say

A friend recommended me to check Crashplan cloud storage which is on sale due to 'Black friday'. They are doing a timed discount whereby the sooner you purchase a years unlimited storage, the cheaper the final price. I bought it last night for $5.50 or £3.50. Its currently $12 and going up every 2hrs....

Use Lightroom to catalogue into date folders. Also make use of tagging to help identity different types of shot, people and places.

Everything is backed up using crashplan online and to other computers on the local network :)

I bought this last night when the price was about $3. Only problem is, my upload rate is so slow it'll take all year to upload all my images
