I have so far managed to keep away from Facebook (struggle with time as it is!) and try to share my general photography through Flickr. Now that I have my new daughter I should have a better way of sharing her with family members but I'm not so sure of the easiest options. I suppose FB is a good option as most of my family use it too. What other options are there? I did set up a section on Flickr many moons ago but, at the time, most of the family needed to register a yahoo account and it proved a little clunky for them. I also like to keep my Flickr separate.

Should have sorted this by now really so time to get a solution in place. Thanks for any advice.

Why not set-up a FaceBook Group with the only FaceBook Members able to access it being your Family/Friends.

We have a close family group on whatsapp - I load my pics onto there (great at the mo as my young nephew is in India)

Isn't whatsapp a messenger service, can you access via a browser? I'd have to keep emailing myself pics to save to phone as i do now, which is a ballache.

I like the fact that you can publish stuff straight out of LR as I do with Flickr, I guess FB would give me that option.

There might not be any getting away from FB.

So I tend to save a copy from flickr via my iPhone and send it via whatsapp - just feels more secure! Although all my pics are on flickr anyhow (apart from any i deem private!)

Yes, and yes.

web.whatsapp.com

You can attach files from online storage such as Dropbox, or Google Drive to save emailing. (File size permitting).

I share things via WhatsApp groups, texts, Facebook (you can set individual posts to different levels of privacy) and Dropbox depending on what I'm sharing, and who with.

So how do you save everything to Flickr? I haven't found the process of creating groups etc that intuitive, maybe I need to revisit that and suss out. Once uploaded from LR there's a bit of cleaning up to do: categorising, adding tags, setting privacy etc. How do you upload something that you want to categorise as private and not share? If I upload from LR then it's public, albeit briefly, until you sort it into the appropriate album / set?

I don't like how everything appears on your photostream, there's probably a way of changing that, I shall investigate a bit more.

What file size do you use in Flickr? I have kept my standard 1024px web output the same for years, but have noted that it doesn't display too well on my iPad from Flickr. I think max is twice this but then you have the issue of your files potentially being ripped?

Thanks Jay. Maybe WhatsApp is worth thinking about too, hadn't considered until this thread so glad I posted now. I do use it occasionally and it is handy for groups, especially those without the latest smart phone, which for my purpose, will be some of my older relatives.

As far as I know, to make WhatsApp work on a PC/laptop you have to have it active on your phone at the same time. Also WhatsApp isn't available on iPhone or other Apple devices.

Works fine on my iPhone Dominic?

My mistake, I was lead to believe it wasn't available on Apple. Maybe I'm thinking of some other app.

Instead of WhatsApp, try Telegram. It runs on a PC as well as mobile devices. It's a free, open source, no ads, no charges messenger. https://telegram.org/
As well as on my phone, it works when I'm using a PC at work or home, where my phone might be off or offline. The full chat history is fully available and up to date on all devices.

I use Picasa for sharing pictures to family. It has the usual privacy options.

I'm having a play with Flickr. Actually set up a family group yonks ago but it's been left to fester. The problem I have with Flickr is that everyone needs to have a bloody Yahoo account to become a member of the pool, ideally. I need to keep it simple for the parents.

It seems that you can't add albums (this has all changed since I last used it properly! Used to be sets etc) to a group as an album. I would like to section things into albums so that I can go back and add some old stuff, otherwise it's going to look all over the place as one big stream.

You can still create albums (sets) . I do it from the uploader that Digikam uses. I can't see a way in the mobile client. I don't have any paid account nor nuffink.

I've kept away from it, but daughter / wife and her family use it and yes, it's a great way to share photos taken, especially for the "older" generation of family - get Facebook account set up and them logged in and away they go...If a lot of family use it, then this would probably be your easiest and most looked at way - especially as they seem to be on Facebook much more than we do TP :D
