With 2008 out of the way, I decided to look back on my first full year of photography. I have participated in a few online courses, and played about a bit, just to try and home my skills as best I can. So I have pulled out a selection of images, which I think are some of my best of the year, so if you could take a look at them, say what you think, am I wasting my time? Or is there a bit of talent in them? Any feedback would be great.
Thanks
Ben

I guess this would be better in the indepth critique section. I certainly wouldn't say you are wasting your time, especially if you are enjoying it...

Your photo's are very good (waaay better than anything i ever produce!) but does it matter what other people think, if YOU enjoy it then its all good isnt it?

I know that, but it is nice to know other people like what you are doing. Also, I may be able to pick up a few tips from some of the great togs on here. Wouls the mods be able to put a copy of this thread in the critique section aswell?

Nowt wrong with those shots Ben.

Some are stronger than others, and some would no doubt come out better if you took them again in 12 months time with a little more knowledge under your belt, but certainly not worth giving up on.

As has already been said, as long as you enjoy it, does it really matter if anyone likes them or not?

Number 3 captures the mood very nicely.
I hope you were behind a long lens when taking no. 6!!

I have to agree some are better than others, but they are all nice shots.
I really like no.9

I think you are doing well.

1,3,5,7 absolutely dont work for me mate,

#2....
sky looks a tad too bright IMO, easily solved in photoshop though.

#4....
nothing wrong with the shot, would look better possibly as a HDR ?? to bring more detail into the image.

#6....
Nice low angle, car looks totally frozen though so knock the shutter speed down a little.

#8....
No reason but this just works for me :)

#9....
works well, again perfect HDR opportunity.

#10....
nice macro shot and the DOF is spot on!!

Don't take offence by any of this, just giving my honest opinion to try and help you improve. Stick at it, maybe get a Canon ;) just make realistic aims/goals throughout every year :)

Speak Soon,

Cheers,

1 - boring
2 - good, but a bit too much sky
3 - pretty good, but a little dark for me
4 - like the lighting on the hills
5 - boring
6 - very very good, loads of action and bold colour
7 - too much sky, but I like the lead in lines the walls make - good composition
8 - cute
9 - very nice, but I'd move the horizon from the middle, I think it would help the composition
10 - yellow flower is quite small and difficult to see any detail in it, the white bits in the background are a little distracting.

I like 2, 6, 7 & 9 the best. Not a bad set.

I like 9 the most, 3 nad 6 are nice, albeit the 3 could do with a bit of postprocessing to bring out more of that car. 7 could be played with as well. my opinions. Don`t give up!

Hi Ben,
The first thing to bear in mind is that 12 months is not long to be taking photographs seriously and also, editing is a key part of the process with digital images. Some of the shots here would, I think, look better with some more processing.
No.1: Its a pleasant enough scene, but perhaps would be better when there is some foliage on the trees and shrubs. There's a nice lead-in with the river.
No.2: As already said, the sky is a bit bright and there are some quite distracting blown out highlights in the clouds. Again, nice lead-in with the river and it definitely has potential. :)
No.3: I like the idea behind this shot, but think its too under exposed.
No.4: There's perhaps a bit too much open space on the right, maybe a crop just to the right of the boulder would help? Also, I wonder if this would look good in monotone?
No.5: Lovely reflections, but lacking a bit in contrast and could do with some more clouds in the sky. The lighting is very nice and this would be a really nice shot with some more contrast and possibly cropping out some of that sky.
No.6: Very nice. :) Good composition and colourful.
No.7: Again, nice lead-in but too much bland sky.
No.8: Very cute!
No.9: My favourite. :) Beautiful lighting and lovely textures in the field. The horizon is a bit too central for my taste and you could possibly do with cropping the sky a wee bit.
No.10: The white in the background is a bit distracting as is the leaf adjacent to the flower.
There are some really nice shots here, some of which could be improved with some extra processing, but I'd say you're doing well and should persevere. It will be interesting to see more of your work over the coming years and for you to compare this set with those you take with a bit more experience under your belt.
The most important thing is for you to take pleasure in what you shoot. You'll never get a photograph that everyone loves, but you will get images that have a real impact on you and that's what really counts in the end. ;)

Thanks for all the replys guys, its nice to know that some of my shots are liked by some of you. Hopefully, I can improve on last year, and keep learning. I will post some shots up from time to time just to get you c+c's.
Cheers
Ben

some of them are amazing, some are a little cliche to what you would expect from beginner photographers, but overall they are very good

A very nice set...#9 is superb! Keep it up and I am sure you will improve further :)

#8and #9 are outstanding others are too common.
