Hello I was just wondering how people pack their camera bags?

I have got a Crumpler Pretty Boy backpack, where all the photo equiptment lives in the bottom. I had a play around and have decided to keep my 18-55 VR lens on my D5000 when in the bag... I have put it in lens facing down, is this the best way? Or will it mess up my front element or focus motor?

I always agonise over this.... Have I got everyhting I could possibly need. I am careful to make sure it is well protected tho, no point in getting somewher to find you have damaged something!

Whatever way I can best fit them all in. Lenses attached to camera, lenses loose lens down, loose lenses on their side. I just have a place for everything in the roller bag so I know where it is and can grab it without looking.

I've got a Crumpler Italian Connection and an now debating changing it as there isn't sufficient room in the bag for the layout I want (having just upgraded to a newer larger body)

I'm thinking of rolling LowePro or ThinkTank.

Hahaha squeeeeeeze it all in  So I shouldn't worry about facing the lenses down with the camera attached?

How did u configure it all? I have one of them half backpack's :D

Pentax with 40mm pancake in the bottom lens up, so if the backpack should fall the film door takes the knock. GH1 above it lens down. Rest of the lenses in their little compartments sideways or up/down depending on shape of lens. Just like agame of Tetris.

Wow I used to love that game :)

It seems that it is ok to have lenses facing down at the bottom of the backpack with the camera on top.. so I will leave it like this for the time being. Just got to remember to place it down carefully and not fill the top compartment with heavy stuff

I used to pack my 450D with lens attached with the lens facing down. I'd much rather pull the camera back out via the body, rather than potentially grabbing the lens and pulling it all out that way. That would probably do more damage than having the camera packed lens down.

Get some large silicagel bags and put them in the bottom of the bag. This absorbs moisture andprovides some extra impact protection in the bottom of the bag.

Nice tip, hadnt thought of this. Will prevent lens fungus.

this will only work if the bag is airtight otherwise it will only suck moisture out of the surrounding air.

and you want new and/or renewable silca gell packs, ones that have been sat in shoe boxes etc for months wont be much use.

peli do some rechargable (in the oven) metal packs for a few quid if that helps, ive got some in my peli cases.

Oh
the ones in shoe boxes are of course far too small
the ones I use are about the size of your palm I think I got the last lot from RS. All silica gel packs can be rejuvenated with judicious use of heat.
Dont use the Peli ones miss moo as they are in a hard case and I suggested them to you for impact protection as well as moisture protection. I will let you have a couple to try.
Of course if the bag is not airtight there will be some pulling of moisture from outside but you need gelpacks to dry out the inside of your bag and protect your gear after a day outside where maybe your bag has a higher moisture content than the outside, especially if you are not in a postion to empty your bag.
An alternative to silica gel that is great for absorbing moisture is dried rice but put it into a breathable cloth bag and separate the dust from it first. Also this would make for good impact protection.

I've got a couple of bags for when I use the full monty, tbh the lens I always use is the 70-300, so that starys on the camera, and then I just pack the other body and lenses around it. Keep them snug with the inserts and you should be fine!

No harm at all in having the lens faced down - cameras and lenses are actually amazingly robust. If it couldn't survive in a proper bag then I'd say it wasn't fit for purpose.

i wouldnt like to put any of the fabric type coating anywhere near any large source of heat (i.e. an oven) to be honest.

well you dont put them next to your lens.. that'd just be silly

you only have to achieve enough heat to evaporate the water. Check bag material is safe and place on a baking tray for 15 minutes max at 110 centigrade.

Unfortunately miss moos camera bag with body and lenses in means there really isnt anywherethat isnt next to a lens.

Agreed, and the bag would have to be opened and closed again quickly.

Otherwise the silica packs will try (and probably fail) to dry out the planet.

Always lens attached to body, lens facing down, so I can just grab the camera out of the bag. Use the middle compartment for the camera and then fit the other lenses and things around it. That's in the Muffin Top 7500.
