How do you make a website?

use joomla to build the pages around pixelpost then use a wrapper to get pixelpost in joomla.

or

php pages to build around PP to flesh it out. For what its worth, i think your site is very clean and tidy. Might even look at using pixel post myself when i next decide i have a website!

That's a good idea. And if all on the same server, which in this case it will be, then Joomla's iframe (wrapper) works really nicely.

Just goes to show how many options there are available with Joomla! :)

i like joomla now ive been using it a while, still find the section/category a bit confusing though

As an alternative to content management type sites, there's always template based websites where the minimum of work is required, replace text and images with your own and alter css if required.

for example.....

http://allwebcodesign.com/setup/templates.htm

okay it costs a few pounds for the template but saves a lot of time and work

thanks, not sure how to add a wrapper, problem is though how would I get it to all look the same as my pixelpost?

Well if I can work out how to use the iwrapper thing with joomla (I havne't full researched it yet but if someone can explain a little then that'd be cool)

but I quickly made a lightroom site, just wonder what people think, it still doesn't have a propper home page like i wanted (not sure how to add pages with lightroom) but I think it looks tidier and easy to use and it seems smoother and quicker, but lots of *** say my current site looks really nice and clean, so just wonder what *** think is better www.joshuathomson.co.uk or www.joshuathomson.co.uk/lightweb/lightweb

Have you looked at installing some addons to pixelpost to make it suit your needs better?
I'm currently installing pixelpost to see if it works for me!

Joshua I feel you need to slow down a little and decide what it is you want your site to look/feel like then go off and research each system BEFORE implementing. I understand exactly where you are and have spent more lost hours than I should have chasing on-line rainbows that never have that crock of gold.

As far as flash pages in LR I would say avoid as you almost certainly bar a certain amount of the browsing population from seeing your work properly. Better to use javascripts imo.

Wrapper implementations in Joomla are very simple, just make sure the template offers suitable widths to accommodate what you require.

The whole Section / Category thing in Joomla is about how you want to display your material. For simple sites you will find you create categories and sections with the same name. To display content in Joomla all "articles" require a Section and a Category to be entered before it will display.

You can add users into your Joomla system to help. Oli has had a look at my Joomla backend (ooer!) on one of my sites which helped him see how content was being used. Happy to help if i can.

I think your probably, right. although I'm not sure I agree with the flash comment.

What I want is a site, which has a homepage, which I can right about site updates on, and just introduce my site and work. A gallery section, which can house all my pictures, in the most user friendly way (from a site visitors point of view), and I would like a contact from page, and an about/more info type page where I can right a bit about me and what equipment I use etc.

And I'd like it to look simple clean and be user friendly. My current site does all that but I don't feel that it's that easy to browse through images, as it is kind of clucky and you can see what the next pic will be. And I can't add more pages to it or have a propper homepage which isn't just my latest image.

Joomla would certainly meet those requirements. In particular, the writing about site updates part is a bit of a forte with Joomla, as it's a case of creating a new 'article', assigning it to your 'Site Updates' category that you'll have already created. Then it automatically appears in a predetermined 'module', that you've placed on your homepage - in the Header perhaps... or in a box on the left, or right in the middle! - Sounds a bit complicated, which it kind of is, but once set up, it'll all run smoothly, and everything will actually be so much easier in the long-run.

As for a gallery, I think Joomla comes with a few built in options which may cover you, but if not, that's where the wrapper comes in, where you build a separate gallery, like your current site, and then place it within a page on your Joomla site. Another option is to use something like Gallery2, which is a pretty versatile gallery program, again server and database based. If you don't want purchase options, it works really well in a wrapper. If you want to integrate with PayPal, you run into problems though :(

Contact pages are particularly good with Joomla.

And with the right template, it can definitely have a clean and simple look, and be very easy to navigate through

Phewph!

Thanks, it seems like joomla is the way to go, I guess it can't do any harm just installing it in a directory and seeing what happens.

right, where do I start?

Do be aware though, as already mentioned, it's a very steep learning curve. I've been working on my site for about 3 weeks now, and it's still not ready to go live (although I am a bit of a perfectionist!).

I have one more conundrum for you though, and hopefully someone will be able to work it out -

If you build a Joomla site in your 'yourdomain/joomla' directory, and it is all succesfull, and you are happy with it, you would probably want it ultimately in your root directory ie. www.yourdomain.co.uk

So how would this problem be solved?

Answers on a postcard!

well I'm gussing I could just download the files and folders within the directory, delete my pixel post folders, and just stick them all in public_html

or do you have to install joomla?

I'm hoping that's the answer! Although you would just move them, rather download, and upload :D

yeah, I guess it worst comes to worst I could make the main ddomain a redirectory to the subdomain

I'm hoping that is also an option, although I would'nt be happy with that one myself.

well yeah its not ideal, but its the next best thing i guess, but I'm gonna have a play with it and if it seems like im gonna be able to get some good results with it i'll just put it straight in my main domain

Who is your site hosted with?

well it's actually hosted on a very kind friend of mines server which he has allocated me some space for free because I'm not really all that well financially...

Ok, cool. There are some requirements for Joomla, so I guess your friend will be able to tell you if they are met.

My Joomla site is at www.olivercoats.co.uk

If put it online for you to have a look. Lots of links don't work at the mo, and the layout needs some work, but it may give you some idea as to what you can do.

the requirements are met, because there less than that which pixel post requires.

thanks, it's looking good btw.

did you make that template yourself from scratch?

Thank you. That template is one of the 3 that Joomla comes with. I've edited the CSS to adjust the space I have for my Oliver Coats Photography logo. And I've uploaded a few pics, which appear randomly on the right side of the header.

If you look again now www.olivercoats.co.uk

That's the another of the built in templates.

The third has lots of bees on it??? Not quite my thing

I like that template it looks cleaner, but the buttons aren't so swish

I've downloaded the joomla files now, do i just upload em all to the same folder?

You put the Joomla folder (ie the folder which contains everything) into the public_html folder, which your current site sits in.

okey dokie, just uploading the files to the server, may take a bit of time.

Cool. Incidentally, I prefer the template which I showed you first, although I think I need to spruce it it with a bigger header, to give it a bit more life.

yh perhaps, I think it needs to be made less wide and centrallised as well so it's less "sprawling" if that's possible. thats just my opinion though, what do i know

yeah it does a bit, I dunno then

Yeah. Mind you, if I just decrease the size of my browser window, it has the same effect. Which makes me wonder if it's happening to anyone that visits my site, on a smaller screen. :suspect:
