Ok, a silly question I know........But how do you know if a lens fits a certain camera? I have been looking for lenses for my D40 and keep having to ask if it will fit or not:bonk:

I understand that certain lenses wont auto focus, but how do you know if a lens will actually attach and work on a certain camera:thinking:

Sorry for the silly question:help::bonk:

Cheers in advance

PS: I became a dad yesterday for the first time :woot:with a baby boy (We were told we were having a girl so I am a bit shocked! :bonk:and I had to check twice!!!!) So I expect my lens fund to go down slightly!

i dont think you have a problem on a cropped body(unless nikon make some full format only). there are a few lenses designed for cropped bodies, these will be too close to the sensor on full format or will give a round crop on full format, yet full format suffer the field of vision thing. then you only have to look for nikon fit. as canon pentax olympus etc all have different fitment rings(as in thread size etc etc)

It will be a Nikon F mount lens. Which is pretty much every lens that will AF on your D40. Third party lens makers just use 'Nikon fit'. As for the AF, only lenses the have AF-S and AF-I (For Nikon lenses) in their name will work. Sigma uses HSM as their AF-motor designation, and I think Tamron and Tokina don't have any Nikon fit lenses in their line-up that have internal AF motors.

So if I am looking for a lens (Dont mind if it would only manually focus) simply put(I am a newbie) what should I look for in the descripton (other than Nikon fit)?

Congratulations, by the way!

Homer Simpson: It's a boy... and WHAT a boy!
Dr Hibbert: No, Homer, that's the umbilical cord.

All Nikon lenses will "fit", but only AF-S lenses will auto focus on a D40.
AF lenses won't auto focus.

Congratulations on your new-born :)

All Nikon AF-S will fit and auto focus, so too will Sigma HSM lenses.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!

Expect piccies soon
dont know about nikon lenses, but i just wanted to say Congrats :)

Thanks for the kind words about my son:D It hasnt sunk in yet:clap:

Also thanks for the replys on the lens, I think I understand now (Sort of:bonk:) So that that mean that pretty much any lens will fit but it may not auto focus eg: Sigma etc? :bonk:

I think there may be some danger of confusion here. Let's keep it simple.

Any Nikon/Nikkor lens will physically fit. Any third-party lens (Sigma, Tamron etc.) made for a Nikon mount will also physically fit.

However, Nikon lenses that are not AF-S will not autofocus on a D40. Sigma lenses that are not HSM will not autofocus. These are both easy to spot because these manufacturers include the key letters as part of the lens nomenclature. (For example the Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 G IF-ED VR will autofocus, but the Nikon AF 80-200mm f/2.8 D ED will not autofocus.)

For other manufacturers you need to be a little more careful because they don't put the clues in the name. Look for lenses which say they are designed for Nikon AF-S (not Nikon AF), or which say they have a focus motor in the lens.
