Going away later this year and would love to take some of my gear with me but as its a package holiday not sure of how I can keep it safe without having it with me 24/7 So has anyone any ideas of best way to keep my camera etc safe.Think may be best to leave it all at home and just relax on my jollies

I think it really depends on how much gear you lug about with you. If you are anything like me I'm sure that's quite a bit!! I've just checked your camera bag, I would probably take 400d with the kit lens, buy a lowepro TLZ mini, here and make do. I have it as well, doubles up as a good holdall for wallet, sunglasses etc.

Thanks for that may be a single lens would be best, possibly could do with an all day walk about type lens so I can snap the kids and photo things of interest to me along the way have to have a look to see what suitable

If you take a dedicated camera bag as hand luggage, when you arrive at your room and have unpacked, put the camera bag inside the main suitcase and padlock it. Even take a shackle padlock to secure it to a piece of furniture if it'll help you relax :)

Keeping your camera gear safe isn't that much different to keeping your wallet safe. Just think about where you're leaving it. Keep it out of sight when you're not using it. (stash it in a locked suitcase for example) Many hotels have a small safe that you can get a smaller DSLR into if needs be.

TBH what's the point in having a camera if you're going to leave it at home all the time. Insure it properly and don't worry about it.

For situations where I have to leave anything in a hotel room without a safe and I have doubts about security, I have a wire mesh bag big enough to hold a small rucksack and can be padlocked to something secure (usually the bathroom plumbing). I got it from a place selling travel accessories. Can't remember where.

Never had a problem with hotel rooms, just find somewhere to hide it when you're not in the room.
I use a Lowepro rucksack and when in restaurants I hook my leg through an armstrap.

i have ahard shelled suitcase with combination, that is always locked. Its not fool proof but it stops the sticky fingers eyeing something up.
all my camera gear goes into the case as normally the wife likes to unpack everything on the first day so i have an empty suitcase at my disposal.

good tips on the memory cards as well.

Insurance

Mine is either on my back, in the room safe or locked in the hotel safe it's not rocket science, I do try to travel light and don't have the biggest lens collection!

Insure it and check your policy for what it covers abroad. If its stolen from a Hotel room then you should be able to claim on it.
I usually take mine EVERYWHERE with me on holiday except for meals and times by the pool, which i just pop it in my suitcase.

Or buy yourself a good compact! Much easier to stow somewhere.

Well, I suppose for those with two cameras another storage method is required

.....won't cover you on holiday, unless you take adequate precautions, like using the hotel safe....

Yes it will if you get the right insurance cover.

If you have to leave your camera somewhere where you are unsure of its safety, at least take the card out and keep it with you, or hidden in the room. But not in your wallet.

Thanks for all the tips going to buy a good solid case to keep it in
Cheers Bob
