How do you focus manually with a Canon 400D?

I'm sure this question must have been asked before but I can't find anything. (I've done a search on here and on google)

When I started photography I had an old Practika and all the lenses I had were manual focus...well the camera was manual only. I used to hate it and always struggled to get anything in focus (mixture of having a dodgy camera and dodgy eyes I think!)

Anyway I now have a DSLR and am finding the want to use the manual focus option occasionally for selective focusing, but for the life of me I cant figure out how to do it. The lenses I have have a MF/AF switch so it must be an option.

Help!
 
Erm - I think your overthinking this one my good chum.

Switch your lens to MF and then focus by hand. Thats all there is to it :bonk:
 
Just switch the lens to MF and pow off you go.

That doesn't seem to work. the only 'turning bit' my lens has is to zoom in / out, but doesn't focus.

Am I just a bit thick?:'(
 
Ah I see the problem here. The kit lens has a *micro focus ring. When you focus the lens in AF mode the front part turns right? If it does, thats what you turn to manual focus. My very first lens was like this, its a bit crap.
 
Yeah the focus ring is the small one right at the end (front) of the lens.

You can go ahead and ignore that. As well intentioned as it was that advice only applies to Nikon. :thumbs:
 
With regards to the selective focusing; you can just point the centre point to the thing you are focusing on and then recompose with the shutter button half way. Used with spot or centre weighted metering can give quick pleasing results!
