How do you fancy a 1Tb or 2Tb SD card?

It'd be great for recording HD on the hd capable SLRs that's for sure.

Cool - a DLSR with a 4TB RAID array inside - the best of all worlds!

But imagine filling it up with photos then find the card fails...... I only use 4gb cards at most, the whole "putting your eggs in one basket" thing!

Have a look at what a RAID array is. That's why I mentioned it.
Basically you'd use 3x2 TB cards to give you a 4TB array with a redundant drive. You'd have secure data then - if any one card fails, the data is safe.

It's apparently not quite as far along as the newly-announced SDXC card format, but Sony and SanDisk have just announced that they're jointly developing a new Memory Stick format (tentatively dubbed the "Memory Stick format for Extended High Capacity") that'll reach the same dizzying 2TB heights as its SD counterpart. There's no more details on the format beyond that, unfortunately, but the pair has also announced that they're working on a new Memory Stick HG Micro format as well, which promises to boast a blazing 60MBps maximum data transfer speed. That's made possible, in part, thanks to a new 8-bit parallel interface with an increased 60MHz interface clock frequency. Sadly, there's no indication of a release date either of 'em, with the companies only going so far as to say that format licensing for both new formats is "scheduled to start in 2009."

This is years ahead, not round the corner, unfortunately.

agree with that ^

1TB would be well over overkill in a camera - i have 1 4GB and a few 2GB ones

Then you put your camera down...

You could walk around with your finger on the trigger and not worry about missing any shots ever.

Choccy...

People were saying the same about the 128mb cards a few years back, 'Oh I only use a 32mb card, can't be too careful' and all that.

So far (maybe I'm lucky) but I have never had any of my CF or SD cards fail on me at all.

Makes me smile to remember my first SD card cost almost £1 per MB.

Yh, this is good, it will drive prices down, and help make current technology extremely cheap. This is fantastic news for us all.
This kind of storage is designed for things like HD recording.
But may also help with the higher end photography? Medium format cameras do create rather large raw files these days.

Heh, as grant says, years away, although it's rumoured WD is about to release a 2TB 3.5" drive to over take seagate's 1.5.

It might sound ridiculous, but I am sure the RED SLR system that was linked recently would soon start munching through it.

Exactly the point I'd hoped people would pick up on.

128mb probably WAS enough when images coming out of the camera were a couple of hundred K at a time.

Now they're 30MB and rising.

You're not really going to be storing more images per card. The rate of capacity increase will probably correlate to the rate of size increase Cameras/HD Cameras are spurting out.
