How do you cook rice!?

Bring a pan of water to the boil, add salt, bung in the rice which I normally rinse first but doesn't matter too much. Now the big thing is to stir once to separate the grains and test frequently to see if it's cooked. Bite a grain. If it is hard in any way, it's not ready. As soon as you can bite though it without it feeling hard, it's ready. Rice is at its worst when over cooked so prevent this at all costs. Strain in a sieve and serve immediately. It will stick if you leave it to sit in the colander or sieve. Job done:thumbs:

So when you do it this way, at the end of 10 minutes, you still have water in the pan? I assume you then just drain and it should be good to go?

Thanks.

Yep, just pour it through a sieve and jobs a goodun

I like a few others found that cooking rice like you do pasta works best, we now just always use the rice cooker, they are actually pretty good, superb for sticky rice but if you want it looser I find stirring a few times whilst cooking and turning off before it says is done works.

I endorse what's been said about microwave rice steamers. Used one for years until it cracked up. Have never got around to replacing it.

The other method I use I found years ago and have used it for small and large quantities. Also using when camping or caravanning when no microwave and no ability to drain and pour over boiling water.

1. Measure out the required quantity of rice using a cup style measure. The recipe I read asked that you then wash the rice in cold water for one minute (removes the starch). I often leave out this stage and it does not seem to adversely affect the outcome.

2. Add rice to saucepan and, using the rice measure add 1 1/4 times the quantity of water. Sometimes I add 1 1/2 times.

3. Apply heat to bring to boil for two minutes. I stir once with a fork to separate grains.

4. Apply tight fitting lid to pan and reduce heat for another 8 minutes. DO NOT REMOVE LID.:nono:

5. Turn off heat and leave for another 10 minutes without lifting the lid.

6. When time is up, fork throught the rice to separate grains and serve perfect rice.:)

There seem to be different opinions about washing rice to remove the starch first. We do, but we used to buy our rice in 10kg bags - small sacks really - from an importer when we lived in South Africa, and it was very dusty. Maybe rice that's been commercially prepared and packed doesn't need this?

Surprised no one has asked the question yet... so I will :D

Why do you eat so much rice? Especially if what you make turns out crap?

Boil in bag stuff for me, wack it in a pan, boiling water from kettle then wait til bag nearly bursts :D

Lol good luck on getting fat and slugish

Rice is a killer for burning off. It's not easy and stores and turns to fat Sooooo that's why I said good luck.

Oh? What do you train, how long have you been training, what's your regime?

I do it by using lots of water and keep checking it as it cooks. I have never had any success with measuring the rice and water carefully and leaving it alone to cook.

Lol I'm a pro mma fighter been training for 13 years

Really? Then perhaps you could give more constructive advice than "good luck getting fat and sluggish"?

Edit: Training for 13 years, since you were 9? Riiiiight...

You may or not be a "pro MMA fighter", it makes absolutely no difference to me. Your advice does seem more to inflate your own ego than to provide any real benefit though.

My way is to measure twice the volume of boiling water to rice. Rinsing the rice beforehand makes no difference in my experience.

Bring the water to the boil and then add the rice. Stir once, put the lid on and turn the hob OFF. Leave for 10-12 minutes. All the water has been absorbed and it is always light and fluffy.

At what point did the op ask for help? So who am I to start reeling off advice to him that he may or may not know? Now Tbh I would look like I'm on an ego trip if I done that.

Can I ask then, why you wished him good luck getting fat and sluggish after he stated he took his fitness regime and diet seriously, if you weren't trying to appear a know it all?

A joke? Read it back. Seriously, that's a joke?

Don't talk daft.

Talk daft? Lmfao ok big man go away and stop creating trouble out of something that had nothing to do with you in the first place you internet warrior!

Jog on kiddo, good luck with the fantasy and generic cliche'd dietary advice.

Yeah I do not understand how rice makes you fat and sluggish?

Lets not turn this into a slanging match, but I eat rice and oats to get the complex carbs that my diet requires. I was last measured at 11% bodyfat, at 210lbs. Not exactly fat, nor would I call myself sluggish.

I'm not turning this into an MMA slanging battle, but I trained Muay Thai for 3 years. Granted, I was fighting at 170lbs back then, and yes, I probably was much faster than I am now. But am I fat and sluggish now? No. lol.

Well, you have a bonafide pro to advise you now Mrbez... :D Leave that rice alone, you hear?!

Yes getting the carbs you need from rice is good but you do have to calculate the amount of your carb intake to what you burn! If you don't burn enough then it will store and turn to fat.

All you are doing is showing how immature you can be, so here is some more advice, take your head out your arse and get a life you sad little man! This is all!

I know that mate. As I said, my diet is very strict. I have all of my macro's down for what works for me. Over the past 2 years I have experimented with carbs, fats, proteins etc, and I can now add weight whilst keeping circa 10-12% BF.

Any carb in excess will cause you to store fat, generally simple carbs such as sugars etc. Not neccessarily complex carbs such as rice.
