How do you carry your Kit??

Having been an avid reader of this site for a while now, (trying to pick up as many tips as possible) I noticed a lot of members have some serious amount of "kit"
I'm an owner(truck) driver and work away all week and I take all my gear with me, just in case I see something on my travels that inspires me. (industrial estates and lorry parks are getting less photogenic)
I'm finding I've outgrown my lowerpro bag as I cannot fit everything in. ( 400d, nifty, 17-85 IS, 70-200 IS, sigma 2x tele) I am thinking of an aluminium case, but I do like to go for a wander and a case wouldn't be ideal.
Your thoughts please.

There's a huge range of rucksacks/backpack type things on the market, from ones which can carry a small amount of kit, to absolutely vast amounts! Have a look at the lowepro or tamrac websites and I'm sure you'll be able to find something that'll suit your requirements!

I suggest a backpack, many on the market. I also suggest a second large padded box, anything will do really, keep the box in your truck and fill the backpack with what you need for a particular walk.

I often take two bags with me when I am driving, my backpack (Dakine sequence) and another bag to keep the bits I could not decide to leave at home.

i have the same kit as you bar the 2x converter, but my lowepro 200AW would fit my kit plus that fine.

After much thought, I went for a Lowepro Topload holster - it holds my 5D and 24-70mm f/2.8 comfortably, which is good for most situations, and it's easy to grab and chuck in the back seat of the car when I feel like going somewhere.

For the rest of my kit, I've gone for a different approach. Everything gets stored in an ordinary rucksack (each lens in its own padded case, of course). I couldn't find any sort of photography bag that would hold my other kit comfortably (70-200m f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4, flash) - and besides, I don't want to advertise the fact that I'm carrying several £K worth of kit with me!

Cheers Chris, I've looked at them, I was just wondering what other members used. The 70-200 has its own carrier but i've never used it as its awkward.

Now there's a thought Will,. I need a rucksack thats big enough to have the 70-200 on the body as I don't like to change lenses in adverse weather.

I have the lowerpro 200AW, but I have had to customise the compartments to fit the 70-200. Plus I can never leave it on the body for storage as its too long.

I must admit I do end up parking in some very "choice" places at times, and although I have wanted to go out for a wander wirh the camera, I have not bothered because of the area I'm in. (although they are some of the best places to get good shots.

Dunno whether I'll bother though yet. The fuel costs are killing me at the minute. I don't think Gordon likes british trucks on our roads

i modified he centre section by means of moving the velor bitall the way back and it fits the 55-250mm fine

Drove to Folkstone last Sunday, I would say 70% of units I saw were none UK.

There appears no end to the misery.

I bought a backpack from redsnapper for those days where I do want to take a fair bit of kit out. I have two lowepro bags for short trips with the 5D or 1Ds but for a host of stuff I use the redsnapper.

I had to go to Jersey this weekend for a wedding and I managed:-

5D plus grip and two spare batteries.
24-70 f2.8
70-200 f2.8
15-30
100mm macro
nifty fifty
ST-E2
EX580 plus a spare set of batteries
Cards and cleaning gear
And a monopod attached to the front.

It weighed 8kg and went through as hand luggage minus the monopod.

The best bit though is that you can't tell it's photographic gear. Really under the radar with it

I've got a Top Load Zoom 1 from Lowepro for mini walks.

A Lowepro Slingshot 100 AW for longer walks

The most recent addition was a SafePaq bag (probably a local make) that went with me to Turkey. The lowepro equivalent would probably be a MiniTrekker.

But I'd like a nice shoulderbag as well, just seems less work if I want to go somewhere, have quick access, cleanup, and have my whole kit with me. Looking for a cheap alternative to Tamrac.

it really depends on the trip im taking.
at home my lenses stay in a ches of drawers with foam inserts. If im and going round town or doing events i carry a shoulder bag for ease of changing lenses and getting at stuff whist on the move.
Shoulder bag when gonig on treks its only a orion trekker. it has speace on the top compartment for snacks liquids etc. i have devised a way to strap my tripod to it.

Now thats a box !!!! A bit bulky for a truck though.. I wish I had the gear to fill it..

I think the Peli box and the redsnapper is the way to go, and I'll keep my Lowerpro as a back up.

Mine is the SY517 Ian. Not the maximum protection you can get but for the money it's perfect for the trips out I take. And it handled a trip to Jersey perfectly, not a hitch in sight, fits hand luggage restrictions and just under the weight limit too
