how do you avoid 'green eye' in dogs?

This is my 1st post. Just registered yesterday and am VERY much a novice...so the more basic the answer the better! :)

I have a Canon point and shoot. When I take photos of my dogs indoors and a flash is required the dogs look like they are possessed as their eyes are bright green! I have tried putting the red eye thing on but that does not seem to work on the dogs

I know that I can probably do something on photoshop but wondered if I can do it just on my camera

Thanks

Sorry to say there is very little you can do without an external flash.
You need to be able to move the flash away from the camera to prevent the light being reflected back out of the dogs eye as the bright green - with onboard flash this near impossible.
To see what I mean when it gets dark go outside and shine a (not too bright) torch at your dog holding the torch just below your chin. Now do the same but with the torch held as far to your right/left as possible. You will see greeneye on the first position and much less greeneye on the second position.

Alternatively give the dog pair of shades

Thanks for that Richard. This is a great site....I'm going to write down a list of VERY basic questions and then slowly feed them in!!

Thanks for your suggestion Andy......my Rottie isn't too impressed with the idea ***' :)

Don't know how I managed to get *** in the above message....I wasn't swearing honestly! Not just a novice with the camera!

Welcome to the friedliest of photography forums!
It does this with 'T H O' you have to type 'though'! ( it also does it with several other abreviations)

I have a photographic memory that was never developed

That's just what I did wontolla....tried to abbreviate 'though'. It is addictive...I'm going to have to turn computer off 'cos I haven't done anything today other than look at this site! Be back soon though :)

Very glad I discovered your policy on abbreviations before making that mistake myself ;)

Why don't software programmes have green-eye fixes as well as red-eye? Seems like it would make sense given how many photos people take of their pets!

Have you tried putting a hanky over the flash, don't know if it works or not, but worth a try?

Also, if you can get the dog(s) not looking directly at the camera.

I had a go with various flash diffuser methods for the on camera flash - never had a go at a hanky but did try different grades of paper with limited success. The best method was a piece of A5 in a large loop - but on a compact this would obscure the lens!
Also, if you can get the dog(s) not looking directly at the camera.
This will provide the absolute best results unless it is really dark - so if the ambient light levels can be made as high as possible here is your solution :)

Thanks for the latest suggestions folks (not sure what 'contacts?' and the flashing face means from hepburn...I am well and truly a novice I'm afraid :) )
