How do the manual settings on a flashgun work?

So you can set the power 'manually'. As opposed to having the flashgun and camera work it all out for you. Gives you much more creative freedom.

Depending on the flashgun there are two main settings you can adjust. One is the power, i.e. how much light the flash releases, so 1/30th will be 1/30th of its total power outage. The second is zoom, or rather how concentrated the light is. So a flash zoomed to 24mm will spread the light wide, whereas at 200mm it will be concentrated, like a spot light.

Check out the Yongnuo 560ii it'll give you all that you want and at around £40.00 it's a snip :thumbs:
 
Go for the 560-III version! Receiver buildt-in... worth the few extra dimes!

Which you of course will save by not having to purchase the reciever! :D


I got two Yongnuo RF-603 for remote controlling camera as well as flash.
 
One of the big advantages of shooting manual is you can pick up some flashguns for a 3rd of the price of TTL enabled one, if you can get used to using manual it will give you a lot of creative power, however there are times when TTL can be invaluable, ie when you need to shoot on the fly, first dances at weddings and the like, when you just don't get enough time to setup the shot. At the end of the day it all depends what you regularly shoot, and what you think your needs are
