How do speedlights attach to light stands?

basically as the title says, do you need to buy a special fitting or something, i cant imagine exactly how they go on.

also, if you have a speedlight in a softbox remotely, would that canon IR transmitter fire it off, or would it not be able to fire one in a softbox, i imagine the softbox getting in the way.

You use that little plastic "foot" thing that comes with your flash gun. It should have a thread in the bottom of it which screws onto the light stand head, then you simple slip the gun into the top.

As for the softbox, I'm not sure, depends how exactly it attaches I guess, and on the surrounding light conditions.
 
what I would do with mine (I use radio triggers) is turn the head backwards then sit it on the coldshoe with IR transceiver pointing away from the softbox and towards the cam

this is with an ezybox which is designed for hotshoe flashes

usually umbrella adapters are put between lightstands and flashes and generally a cold shoe but the foot would do in a push

No, No NO!!!!

If you plan to use it with a softbox you need a knuckle. Or to give it it's proper name, an umbrella adaptor. http://www.calumetphoto.co.uk/item/MF6829/

It means that you can tilt the head which you obviously need to be able to do if you want to use a softbox. If you try to use a tripod you will only have the light pointing in one direction!
 
There are cheaper umbrella mounts available via 'That Auction Site' that will only cost you a couple of quid, but remember you get what you pay for in life :)

And off the same site you can get umbrella softboxes too, but as you say the IR trigger struggles if you don't get the right angle on it.
 
I originally got some from "That auction site" and my flash ended up on the garden path! Viewfinder stock good stuff as do calumet and the manfrotto is the daddy. IMHO.

Sometimes you get what you pay for and I'd hate to see anyone else end up with in excess of £250 of flash hitting the deck like mine did! :)
 
lol. Their video lights are actually quite good and so are some of their speedlight modifiers!

(Off to have some more mushrooms!) :)
