How do Large websites process product images

Hi all

how to companies such as amazon etc that have millions of products on white back grounds process there photos!?

is theer some poor sod sitting somewhere cutting around the image with the pen tool in photoshop?:cuckoo:
 
They will no doubt have them shot professionally so that there is no cutting out needed, all lit perfectly so it is just the item on the white background.
 
Although most of the time they use the stock shots anyway

and should i be able to achieve the same with a lightbox, and a few white light bulbs ?

im using a pretty basic camera as well - what advantage would a decent camera have over this?
