...Get the yellowy tint off this photo?

I've just been out and popped down to the riverside in Sunderland to try and get some shots. Problem is, the river's edge is lit with orange street lights.
Now before you ask, the shot was not taken in RAW. I'm very new to this and only just know which way to point the camera let alone shooting in RAW. I have never taken a photo in RAW and even if I did I wouldn't know where to start.
Is it possible to get rid of the yellow but at least keep some of the colour (if that makes sense).
I have had a play around with PS and managed to get this;

In your white balace settings you can adjust the temperature (kelvin ) this does
the trick just have a play through them but dont forget to put it back for daytime shots
 
I take it you mean white balance on camera, If so I'll try it next time. Is there anyway I can edit the photo now it's been taken?
 
Only if it was shot in raw you can alter it properly but a jpeg can be altered but not by a lot I f I am correct your camera can shoot raw+jpeg giving you best of both worlds you can view images before deciding which are good to work the raw file but even better its Nikon so you can just shoot raw and view as if its a jpeg through windows if you download the nikon codec

Thanks for that. It looks like I'm gonna have to try shooting in RAW. I've steered clear of RAW so far because of the size of the RAW files.
 
What size cards do you use as I normally get around 260 15mb size photos on a 4gb card
 
I have 2gb and 8gb cards. It's just I shoot at football matches so can take 700+ shots. I suppose I should get used to shooting in RAW when I'm not doing the footy.

Do you always shoot in RAW?
 
I do most of the time, espesh for rugby matches as I shoot manual checking exposure occasionally so I PP adjust the exposures after the fact (usually only +- 1/2 eV)

+1 on the PS image being quite nice ;) I like the DoF

Always as now they are as easy to work with as a jpeg if you have the codec to view them and ps to edit before saving as a jpeg

And all my cards are 4gb so you should easily manage 400+ on an 8gb card
 
I've just taken 3 shots in RAW. I want to play about editing them. I have downloaded the codec from the link you gave me. I've installed it but dunno where it is. I have tried to open the RAW images in PS but it won't let me, can you help?
 
You say "orange street lights." If they are the usual sodium lights, they do not emit a full spectrum; in other words, they do not produce a full colour image.

It looks like you're going the right way about correcting it, and if you can't get much better than that it's maybe because the colours are just missing in the first place.

There's absolutely nothing you can do about that. Shooting in Raw won't help in this case :(

Did you install it as a software.... and restart this way you just look at the images in windows photo viewer
 
I can view the RAW files in Windows viewer and Picasa. But how do I then get to edit them in PS?
 
Its telling me that the RAW files are 'nero encrypted' and have a key over the icon
 
Don't ask me how but I think I've got it. Somehow PS allowed me to change the white balance on the JPEG file. I thought you could only do this with RAW files but obviously not.

Anyway, this is what the image has ended up like;

Seems you have nero burning installed my ps just opens a box asking me which program I should use to open the image next time try right clicking the image to see what options it gives you
 
Yeah, sounds like the file extension has become associated with Nero Burning ROM instead of Photoshop CS3.

Right click a raw file, choose Open File, select Photoshop and (optionally) select "Always use this programme...".

You may or may not need this update as well. It adds support for the D60 to CS3.

If that doesn't work, post a screenshot so I can get a better idea of what's going on.
 
One of the problems with this image is theres not much in the blue channel.
try this trick, make a duplicate image (not a dup layer) convert the dup to CMYK, copy the cyan and magenta channels, then paste them into the blue channel on the original. This should give a fairly good starting point for correcting the colours. Wayne
 
At the risk of appearing stupid...

How do I copy the cyan and magenta channels, then paste them into the blue channel on the original?

I have made a duplicate copy and converted to CMYK.
