Done a google search but as I am not the most technical (and dont want to mess it up) I could do with some pointers. Giving my old macbook to the wife, so thought I would put a fresh install of everything on so its like new (almost).

I tried to use a CD I had with OSX on but it was for previous one to the OSX currently on the machine so wouldnt do it. It has the most recent OSX prior to Mavericks.

Basically just want to wipe everything and start again! Idiot proof instructons needed!

boot from the OSX media (hold alt before the apple logo and boot chime) and it should display the media, click on it.

you may need to click utilities at the top and go into disk manager and do an erase if the media is older than the installed.

Cheers guys. Did the link from apple and went to install. Left it overnight and this morning was all done but nothing had been wiped from the HD. Am looking to do a totally clean install with no previous stuff left.

try this

you can erase your computer using Disk Utility and then reinstall Mac OS X. Before you erase and reinstall, back up your essential files. If you’re installing on a portable computer, make sure your power adapter is connected and plugged in.

Important: To reinstall Mac OS X, you need to be connected to the Internet.
  1. Choose Apple menu > Restart, and then hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys while the computer restarts.
  2. Select “Disk Utility,” and then click Continue.
  3. Select your startup disk from the list on the left, and then click the Erase tab.
  4. From the Format pop-up menu, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled), type a name for your disk, and then click Erase.
  5. After the disk has been erased, choose Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility.
  6. If you’re not connected to the Internet, choose a network from the Wi-Fi menu in the right corner of the menu bar (in the top-right corner of the screen).
  7. Select Reinstall Mac OS X, click Continue, and then follow the instructions.

did you do the erase? if you boot from the media you get a set of options at the top, do utilities then disk utils, then erase. when done just cross out and itll go back to the setup.

osx install wont wipe the drive.
