The portfolio site i'm putting together wants a splash page image of 500 X 500 pixels and LESS THAN 120kb. the first bit is easy - square crop and rescale. However, everything i try comes out larger than 120kb. any ideas?

yep, in photoshop or whatever you use, reduce the image quality until it is less than 120Kb............ should come up as an option when you click "save" or "save as"

If jpeg then save as and choose jpeg. It gives you an option of resolution sizes 1-12, choose each one and a size figure in kb is shown, probably need about 5-6 resolution size

If you go here:

http://xat.com/products.html

you can download the "Jpeg Optimiser" which does a very good job of reducing the file size while retaining quality.

It's FREE - as are some others on there.

EDIT - The "Image Optimiser" file seems to be corrupt so don't bother trying that one.

Also don't bother trying to buy any products - I think the original company closed down years ago.

Thanks very much for that, it's the front page of my website so i need it to be the best possible quality. unfortunately it looks like i'm going to have to settle for cheese. will give xat a go

PNG files are usually smaller too. Also, make sure your on the lowest bit depth possible.
Aswell as that, I think the colour mode matters too, not sure if RGB or CMYK is smaller.

Worth a try.
