How do I improve this pic in photoshop?

Hi all,

I have taken a few portrait shots of some friends children, these were done against a white background that turned out plain grey due to the level of lighting on background.

Is there any effect done in photoshop CS that could give it a little more pop and elegance?

I was thinking of boosting contrast/levels but wondered about a slight halo effect around them to separate them from background a bit.

PS This image will be converted to black n white.
