I have participated in a collective exhibition and 6 of my photos were sold. But the profit went to an institution. Recently, a relative bought two of the exhibited photos and they were the first photos I earned money from! Now I am thinking how I can sell more of my photos and turn the sale of my photos into a source of income. Can anyone share their experience, advice, and ideas in this area?

They are mostly nature photos. The ones that were exhibited were all nature photos and were 30cm x 40 cm. They were framed. I haven't decided whether I will send more than one of the same photo. I would welcome your input here as to what is the policy regarding pricing of unique photos versus photos I sell several copies of.

The ones my relative bought were without frames.

Pricing is the big factor as it needs to match image quality. Have you got a website etc?

I've tried selling a few of my fishing flies in coffee coasters. But I haven't had any responses. I need to rethink about them. I've also blown up a photo of Malham Cove but haven't put it on my website.

I need to gain more experience in taking landscapes!

see if you can find a tea room or cafe etc which will display them as art and sell them for you - they'll typically want a commision of between 10 and 30% - you need to structure your pricing to allow for this

Subscribed to this and hopefully get some more info as its something I wouldn't mind doing, if they are good enough that is, but haven't a clue where to start :-)

T - your shots are easily good enough (as seen on your facebook etc) - the problem you'll have is that northants isnt a very heavily visited tourist destination. landscape Print sales are always easier in areas where people go on trips and want something to remember the area by

Also some of your flowers/abstracts etc might go as art prints (not location specific) but these can be a bitch of a market to break into as its so saturated by generics from places like ikea

that said there are the historic towns that attract a certain ammount of the sort of person that buys so again cafes, galleries, craft shops, craft sales and so forth - also imo prints sell better mounted but not framed - you could target a garden centre (of which there are quite a few arrond you irrc) for plant and 'fluffy bunny' type pictures.

also as Lez says below web presence can work, but you then need to drive trafic to your site by both SEO and by making sure each print you de sell is accompanied by a crard with your url and a qr code

Thanks Pete I do agree with that, as in who goes to northants on holiday  but yes your added edit is true, I'm not near the town at all, I'm in a village and surrounded by country so I'd hope that people would simply buy for beauty and not necessarily a holiday souvenir so to speak..
The village I'm moving too is rather small and has a little shop/po/gift shop so even popping in there to gauge reaction maybe a start!

Also I'm quite random in what I shoot so I'd hope I could appeal to a wider audience, shrugging here, maybe that may go against me and I SHOULD concentrate on one thing ..
Gift shops craft shops cafes are a good idea... Craft fairs maybe too, I did wonder about eBay as well ...
I'll stop rambling now as I don't want to steal the OP thread lol

thats a good idea, and even if they won't hold prints you could probably get them to put a poster up or hold flyers

Postcards etc are another thought

also in that sort of village environment if you house goes straight on to the street you could display a few prints in your windows and ask people to ring the bell to buy , or even have a box at the end of your garden path and an honesty box (people may steal of course -it depends on the neighbour
hood)

Actually that was something i had planned on asking you myself as i noticed you had said in other posts that you do quite well in selling..

I guess that could actually be a first step in finding the right place to create one, and least then have a starting board to work with and cards to hand out is a good idea

The postcards, being a small gift type shop is kind of what i thought, but my house is tucked away so the latter idea wouldn't work...

Flyers and such, i do like that idea:D
