I am under no illusion and realise that i am not a great photographer but what I am struggling to work out is what makes the differences between a snap shot and a stunning photo.

I love the work and composition in the work of Florabella (http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n362/MiaJoieboutique/Blog/florabella1.jpg). Now when i take a photo with what i thought to be similar composition it just looks no where near as special (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vivaimages/8071973995/in/set-72157631736026112/)

My question: is it the lens that makes the difference? my shot was taken on a 50mm.

Your photo is set to private and we can't see it

All the work in Florabella is using the numerous sets of actions sold by Florabella. Buy the actions, add to Photoshop and your photo will look similar.

Or alternatively, learns the ins and outs of photoshop and do it all yourself (may take a bit longer :) )

The 2 points that strike me as being significantly different are that your image features people in relatively dull clothing against a vivid yellow background, and the background is more in focus than the shot you are trying to emulate.

Both of those elements mean that your subject doesn't stand out from the surroundings as much as they could.

Just because the subject is in a similar position in the picture doesn't mean the composition is the same, composition encompasses far more than just the subject.

Typically though, to get your shallow depth of field as seen in the first photo requires a lens with a big aperture.

Guessing none of you use Florabella actions. My wife has a good number of them and even te shallow depth of field is partly made more dramatic using some of teh actions

That aside, the OP shot at f5.6 with an f1.4 50mm lens. If I was trying to recreate the look in the Florabella picture, I would start by aiming for a shallow depth of field and with that lens, I would go wider (I would also go for a less vivid background).

Agree, f1.4 is clearly the first step but after that it is all down to photoshop...

thanks for all your comments- it is helping me to try and break down what it is that makes a great composition so i can try and take better photos.

- I see now that the light in the face is really important
- I also really take on board the need for a shallower depth of field to make the subject pop out more and to make the bright background less distracting. I had a quick play in photo shop to see how this would effect the end result. http://www.flickr.com/photos/vivaimages/8196511935/in/photostream
I know this doesn't really work as i can't remove the flowers that overlap the subject but its more to get an idea of how i might improve things in camera next time- i think its much better- thanks
- yep need to pay more attention to what the subjects are wearing too :)
- also 'Nawty' - could you expand on what you mean?

I love this forum i think its going to really help me- so thanks everyone

I had a quick go in Gimp - I tried blurring, lightening and de-saturating the background a bit - still miles away from Florabella though :D - I should have 'vignetted' the effects too:

Unfortunately the edit looks way too obvious At the very least, the flowers in the same plane as the subject should still be in focus.

It was just a quick go ;)

The point to make was that the background needed to be desaturated and blurred (and peferably with a vignette effect) - I was trying to make a pointer to the way the edit needed to go - not do a perfect job of it!

In the Florabella picture, there is as good as nothing in the same plane or in front of the model - in the OP's picture, there is a lot on the same plane or in front. And that goes long way to explain that "just because the subject is in a similar position in the picture doesn't mean the composition is the same, composition encompasses far more than just the subject". (In response to Op's quesion to Nawty about what he means).

The most obvious difference between the two is the quality of the light. Work on that before you waste half your life in Photoshop. :)

Agree, that the starting photo can be closer but basically Florabella = Photoshop. It is the whole point of Florabella and what the business is based on, selling actions that they have spent time on (for rather high prices!)

The Florabella pic is taken with a child against a very muted and unobtrusive background - your b/g is VERY obtrusive even if it is OOF because of the bright yellow rape seed.

However I also can't give full marks to the Florabella shot either - the twigs on the l/h side I find very distracting and could easily have been cloned out.

.

so if as suggested i shot the same picture at F1.4 would i not have had the problem of such a shallow depth of field that almost nothing was in focus. When I have taken some close up photos of my son at F1.4 the depth of field is so shallow that only one eye is in focus? Or is this more of a problem when you are close up and when you are further away from the subject more is in focus?

It might be what they're selling. But that 'look' is done 90% in camera. There's no way the OPs picture could be turned into that with an action.

This is what's wrong with people who have been led to believe that 'you can fix it in post'

The Florabella picture has been shot with a large aperture and carefully placed subjects relative to the background. Anyone could replicate that look without buying the actions. And the actions won't create that look on a thoughtlessly taken photograph. It's simple physics (I might have used that phrase before),

Today's a good day to shoot a portrait like that.

Yes.

The further away you are from your subject, the larger the DOF for a given aperture so in your scenario you could frame up and start at 1.4 and do a few checks until you're at an aperture that puts everything in focus that you want in focus and no more. A longer lens helps a great deal in terms of separating background from foreground as well. I'd guess the florabella shot was taken with quite a long lens, maybe 85mm or 135mm.

There are 3 things that affect depth of field: focal length of the lens, aperture used, distance from subject.

The shorter the focal length of the lens the greater the DOF (depth of field).
The smaller the aperture of the lens (higher f-number) the greater the DOF.
The further away you are from your subject the greater the DOF.

Your original shot was at F5.6, so maybe you could try something between that and the f1.4 you found too shallow. So try f2.8 maybe or f4.

Another thing is, shots are usually sharper from a lens when its not at its maximum aperture, so only use 1.4 when you really have to or you really do want a minimal DOF.

If you want to get really advanced, say you decided you only wanted 18" of DOF you could use an app or go on dofmaster and look it up.
Say for example your subject was 10' away using the 50mm lens
Using my DOF app, that tells me you need an aperture of f3.2 (this is assuming you are using a Canon DSLR with a crop factor of 1.6).

You dont say what camera you are using, if its a point and shoot you will find it more difficult to get a shorter DOF for a given aperture.

Hope I havent gone too overboard with that attempt at an explanation!

There are two things that affect depth of field: aperture and magnification.

And magnification is a combination of a number of things... mainly focal length and distance to subject..?

I didn't say it could be turned into that, what I am saying is that you will not get that exact style of picture purely from the camera. It requires photoshop to get that style (and no that is not 'fixing' a thoughtlessly taken photgraph, it is applying a style, there is a big difference.)
Yes you could do the photoshop work yourself rather than buying actions but it requires photoshop (or like product) nonetheless.

The example given is actually a subtle one, I am basing my remarks on Florabella and those sort of styles generally that are simply not acheivable straight from the camera (what ever lens or composition you use)

Yes you could do the photoshop work yourself rather than buying actions but it requires photoshop (or like product) nonetheless.

I'm not disagreeing with you - I'm not really familiar with the 'Florabella' style, nor do I much care or feel it's relevant here. The OP was about achieving the 'look' of that particular photo - and the answer to that is in the taking - not in the processing. As you said yourself - that particular photo isn't heavily processed - which kind of leaves me asking; 'why even bring up the processing?' - as the answer to the OP is about background separation - in this particular case the look of the photo is down to:
  • Flat muted lighting
  • Shallow DoF
  • Distance of subject from background
  • Contrast between brightly coloured subject and muted background

I'd not suggested that you had advocated the 'fix in post' mentality, just that an assertion that Photoshop was responsible for the look of that photograph is very misleading:shrug:. Because it's not highly processed and although I enjoy Photoshop as much as anyone - I object to posts where PP is proposed to alter something which should be done in camera. It takes a tiny proportion of a second to create shallow DoF in camera - and hours to do it convincingly in post:cuckoo:.

Phil, yes sorry I got hung up on the Florabella aspect which is generally alot more post production that this example and simply cannot be done without post production (it is not just shallow DoF)

I took the question as how to get Florabella like shots rather than just this exact one as the overall look and feel was referenced with this shot as an example.

Florabella is not my bag either but my wife likes that style and if she likes it then it must be good....

The key scenarios I see is you read a shot from left to right like a book, and the brighter part of the photos is normally the key part..

Comparing the 2 Florabella as composed the little girl 1st in the frame and draws the eye with the colour &Contrast (between subject and background) and brightness of the little girl.

Your example is following somewhat of the same but my eye keeps drawing to the bright sky in the background, crossed with the Bright yellow flowers the subjects seem lost in it all ...black & white might rescue this shot with a little dodge and burn.

just my thoughts but I'm no expert in this myself...

Dan

No need for apologies - it's just friendly debate :)- hopefully to move the OP and anyone with similar questions further down the path of learning Photography

thanks again guys- I have a willing model (my pregnant sister) who I am visiting this weekend so i will try and incorporate all the above tips and see what i come out with. I'll post a couple of photos of the end result

And magnification is a combination of a number of things... mainly focal length and distance to subject..?

Well, yes it is. But, Going by DorsetDude's description if the OP was to go back and shoot the same image, but with a 200mm lens instead of his 50mm, he would expect a shallower depth of field. Of course this wouldn't happen, he would come back with the same photo, with the same depth of field.

EDIT: Well, there would be a slightly different section of background included, when I say 'same shot' I mean if he wanted to frame the subject the same, then he would end up with the same depth of field.

See above.

Isn't that what he said?

Not really.

As others have said, one of the first things I would work on is the lighting. I've just started learning over the past couple yrs and I keep being told photography is about how you 'capture' the light. If you look at the florabella shot, the brightest part of the image is the wee girl, which draws the viewers eye to her, and makes her the 'subject' or focal part in the image. With your shot, the boy and woman are both underexposed in relation to the blown out sky, and the bright field. I'd try either using some sort of flash or reflector to light the people, or failing that try bracketing the shot to increase the exposure of the subjects.

It's good that this acknowledges the importance of the lighting. But the suggested solution still won't give the desired effect.

To replicate that look requires replication of the subject background relationship. so it can't be done in a bright field with a darker subject. No matter how much you play with the light. It needs the background separating with distance and contrast.

There's beautiful photographs to be had in the bright field, if you can get the sky darker and subject brighter using time of day and/or flash. but not a replication of the Florabella shot.
