Have just came home to find my pc has been infected. I run XP and have always had McAfee antivirus installed and this the first time on my pc. It's a metropolitan police virus which I have been told is doing its rounds. I downloaded malware bytes from the wife's laptop to a USB pen but can't get it to run. I tried running in safe mode with networking but it won't run. I have a disc I need to download of dog images for tonight from my hard drive. Anyone help with this one?

One way is to rename malwarebytes.

What I mean is that I can't get it to load from the USB pen. XP loads then straight away it goes to the sign for the Trojan and I can't do anything else. I try in safe mode etc but it won't run from that either. I have an XP disc somewhere which might ave a recovery section on it but I don't know what I'm doing with it and I'm desperate nt to lose any data on the pc.

Use your wifes laptop to download a copy of Ubuntu Linux, it will be an .iso file which you use to create a CD. This CD is bootable and you will then be able to run Linux and save any pictures or data from your hard drive. Save all your data to an external drive or usb stick and re-install windows.

Make sure the pc is not connected to the net. On start up select Start Run and type msconfig. Under start untick anything that looks odd.

Reboot see if you can run system restore to a date before it started.

If this works and you can get the pc working run the AV and malware.

If your not keen on the Linux option try BartPE, burn to a CD it will load windows using the boot cd only, mount the Windows installation on the HDD and remove the virus that way or at least back up your data before a rebuild of the pc.

Try an application called Combofix too.

Paul.

Just managed to get the pc up and running. I eventually got it to run in safe mode, loaded malware bytes from the usb pen, did a quick scan to find a few issues. I then did a system restore to be safe. After the restore i did a full scan using malware bytes then did a full mcafee scan..Everything now seems fine again. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
