say i am taking a photo of someone and i want the person nice and clear and the background blury how do i do this. I no like for a flower you use marco close up but how do you do it with a biger image. my camera i a fujifilm s8000fd fine pix. Thanks

Pick the low f/stop (aperture) number your camera will let you have for the given focal length.

What you are asking for is shallow epth of field (DoF) - use a longish lens 85mm + and a wide aperture f/2.8 - f/4 at most and you'll see the effect you want.

It's called depth of field and it's a function of the aperture. (simple version)

It can also involve the focal length of the lens and the crop factor involved (complicated version)

So lets stick to the simple for now.

f2.8=big hole in the lens to let light in=shallow depth of field (lots of blurry background also called bokeh)

f16= teeny hole in the lens=lots of depth of field=hald the county in focus.

Does that help?

A wide aperture should give you a sharp subject and a blurred or out of focus background.

You need a wide aperture.

You need to put your setting on manual. Turn the aperture upto one of it's lowest numbers (it sounds backwards, the lower the number the bigger the aperture) and ajust the shutter speed so that the light is right too (the bigger the number the longer the shutter speed, 125ths of a second is a good speed, don't go less than 60th of a second) so that you don't get an over exposed picture.

Hope this helps.

Fuji has a 1/2.35" CCD which doesn't help. DOF is a function of distance of subject from camera and background, focal length and aperture. We know that f/2.8 at 85mm and close distance give acceptable background blur. You may try 85mm (500mm equiv!) and walking maybe 200m away (which will negate the benefit of 85mm and f/4 in your case).

In the long term you might think about dSLR and a longish prime or fast tele zoom if this is your goal.

It can be achieved on the Fuji Finepix 8000sd - I've done it.

The trouble with hi zoom cameras like the finepix, is it's very easy to use the preset settings, but if you put it into manual and play with the settings, alot of DSLR effects can be achieved.

I agree though, that if the OP wants to do this reguarly and properly, a DSLR is the best option - but it can be achieved with the finepix models.

Thank-you guys so i should run it at 125 shuttter speed and f 2.8 apature. so the bigger the apature number the more light you get in and the smaller the number it is darker. Thanks for all the help it means alot. cheers

Well it depends on the amount of light. If you set the aperture to f2.8 in good light, there is a good chance you will need a faster shutter speed. Does your camera have an Aperture Priority mode? If so, it may be better to start off by setting the Aperture and letting the camera select the shutter speed to see what you get.

Your camera should have aperture priority mode, normally displayed as an "A" on the dial. With this you can select the aperture and depending on lighting conditions the camera will work out the shutter speed by itself. 125 may be too fast or it may be too slow depending on the lighting conditions.

thanks . yes it does have apature proitary mode but the thing is i don't want to take a marco close up at 1cm lets say a car i want the car standing out and the background blured how do i do this. thanks again guys

What's aperture priority mode got to do with "macro close up at 1cm"?

As for the car standing out and the background blurred, read through all the replies again as it's been explained a few times.

the term your referring to is bokeh. read up on that might also help.

sorry for acting so stupid. And thanks for all your help it's really appricated. cheers

the bigger the number the less light, the lower the number the more light.

Have a look at

Literally, put the camera on the manual setting (the M)

Then change your aperture to a lower number.

Put your shutter speed to whatever you want (if it's for posed portaits certainly no slower than 1/60th of a second though 125 is better).

Make sure that it doesn't seem over exposed (change you aperture or shutter speed slightly or ISO and so long as you focus on the person, you've got it!

Make sure that you're not just clicking the button for the shot though, with the F8000 hold it half way down so that your subject goes into focus then finish clicking.
