Yes
Just found me a copy...and I have never used it, and I have to say, I really want to learn to be able to do cool stuff with my photos.

Are there any decent online guides...or a book I could get that might assist me in learning how to do layers etc etc without months of figuring out?

I have not got Elements 6 but well not just stick it on your computer and pull a picture up and have a muck around in all the different drop down menu's? I never used a book when i was learning photoshop, but then again. I was pretty much skint then so that could have been why i didn't get one

I love adding new layers (normally duplicates) and changing the effect on the back one and rubber'ing out the bits of the front layer that i don't want normal and want it to look like the one i have made different at the back.

I need sleep now? i do need sleep now. Oh gosh

 yeah, I should learn the meaning of the word 'sleep' sometime.
3 hours the night before last, 5 hours last night and here I am still pottering about on here.

I know that feeling

It is just so damm additive though

Tony

The easiest way to get started with Elements is to buy a couple of magazines with Photoshop Tutorials .
Digital Camera & Digital Photo to name 2.
There are video tutorials for PS & Elements in them - an easy way to start + some good hints !

Thanks Bazzer, shall raid the pile of photography mags I have recently aquired when I was debating between cameras to buy, hehe.

I 'upgraded' from Picasa to PSE6 back in January. The basics such as levels, sharpening, straightening and cropping are very easy. Once you start getting into layers and cloning there's a bit of a learning curve but I sussed it quite easily by using a book called "PSE6 - The Missing Manual". It's on Amazon.

I don't know if you need it, but PSE6 doesn't have a curves function of it's own. However, there's a free curves plugin available here.

I am too much a novice in this area to know even what curves are used for, although I have noticed them mentioned in magazine articles...is it to do with highlights etc?

I dabbled with Elements 5 and realised that I wasn't getting anywhere ( and I'm used to getting to grips with new software) I ended up going to an evening class for a couple of hours for 5 or 6 weeks, this was enough to give me the concepts (layers, masking, selections etc) and all the rest could be picked up online or from magazines.

Of course, that was before I discovered this site - now I know any questions can be asked here.

Graelwyn, I'm not 100% certain off all their uses. I'm pretty sure they can be used to alter contrast.

Well, I usually pick things up pretty fast...and have used psp before, I believe, but it does look daunting to begin with and I have a bad habit of wanting to understand everything at once, lol.

I would love to be able to afford CS3 but that really would overwhelm me, I believe, so I went for the cut down option.

Eventually, I would love to be able to do that thing where you merge a number of shots together etc. forget the name of it, but it seems to get fantastic results if the originals are decent.

I started with PSP (v.7,8,9) and found the transition to Photoshop, albeit with some effort, not totally difficult.

I know Elements is more straightforward and would recommend the tutorials from the Digital Photo Magazine CD. They always include ones for Elements and most of the Photoshop ones are translatable to Elements too.

If you Google "Elements tutorials" there is many sources to help. I found this one straight away on page 1 of the Google results page.

Give it a go...

Anthony.
