How can you tell how many clicks your camera has?

I see all the people selling stuff stating it has 2000, 5000 clicks etc. How can you tell? Is it in the menu settings? I have a Canon 450d. Not selling or anything just wondering.

File names!
File names are usually a rough guide. I'm on nearly 9,000 now. Not enough photos have been taken, clearly!

so when i look at my camera just now and on the last photo is states 100-1488 then it has taken 1488 pictures? Cool cheers mate.

I wouldn't have thought file names are really accurate, as my camera has rolled back to 0 from 9999 many times.

Not sure about Canons, but when my Sony reaches 9,999 it resets to zero.

Car odometers used to be like that in the pre-digital age

Modern cars (and cameras) do it properly

Of course file names won't include shooting tethered, though in most cases that won't add much.

File names don't tell you how many clicks - and they can be re-set by the owner. The number of clicks is fixed in camera and cannot be reset so is reliable. For Nikon bodies - use this:

It should also be in the EXIF if you have a good exif reader - under: shutter count - try:

Irfanview, another freeware app, also shows shutter count.

With all these apps I have found that the shutter count only shows in the original from the camera. This means that if you shoot in raw, shutter count will only show in the raw and not in a jpg developed from the raw even though other exif info is retained.

My 300D, 40D and 50D all rolled over at 9999. Makes it fun finding shots in the raw folder called IMG_XXXX when you've got 8 or 9 of them. Luckily I organise by date as well

It shows under Image > Information > EXIF Info > Total Pictures (Last item in the list) for raws from both my Nikon D50 and D90.
