Trying to work out how I can stop myself from wanting to buy new glass all the time! :bonk:

I currently have a Nikon D300 with AF-S DX 16-85mm, AF-S 70-300mm and a AF-S DX 35mm. But I always look on threads on here and see people with faster glass like a 70-200 f2.8 or a 17-55 f2.8 or nice primes like 85mm f1.8 and a I keep tempting myself into wanting to buy them but I know I will end up with all the gear and no idea and want to stop myself spending unnecessarily and train myself to be better with what glass I have now to find it's limits before I decide if I need to upgrade.

The one lens I do keep toying with is an UWA. I have a unused D3000 with kit lens and 55-200 sitting here I am tempted to part ex in for one! The itch needs itching!

Anyone got any ideas how I can do this besides cutting up my bank card!

I have no idea Ian, if you find out can you let me know.

I have lots of lenses I rarely use, but don't like to let them go and I still want more. I guess you have to wait until the money runs out.

I am also like this. I keep thinking that my photos will magically improve tenfold if I bought faster glass. I've started to focus on improving my images via photoshop. There is so much to learn. Its amazing the amount of research I do on lenses, only to make the minimum effort in PP. This is a nice distraction from scanning the classifieds everyday.

^^^^ This... :D Only just brought a 'starter' camera on Thursday and already spent last two days on here reading everything I can.... soooo much I want to buy, but as it's early year there's always too much month left at the end of the money, so if you do find a way, please share.... :p

You can't avoid the lust - it just takes over sometimes - so my advice is to give in ;-)

GAS is a recognised medical condition in photographers. There is no known cure, but it can be tempered or ameliorated with practice and persistence. One of the best ways of taming your urges is to have an empty bank account!

Hmmmmm unfortunately my bank account isn't empty I could easily slip a new Nikon 70-200 f2.8 into a basket and buy it now :nono:

I think I just need to take more time shooting with what I have and see where it's limit's are. So far my only limits with my glass I can see are slow max apature of around f4-f5.6. But most of the shooting I do is everyday or lanscape. Do a little bit of motorsport and aircraft but that's about it.

Though to me a nice Nikon 17-55 f2.8 and maybe a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 and a UWA like the Nikon 10-24 or the Tokina 11-16 with my 35 f1.8 prime seem to tick all the boxes I would ever need to cover.

craig.walton2 you list of equipment in your sig seems to cover what I would like to own but in Nikon format.

There is no cure. The only thing you can do is accept your affliction and smile nicely at the man in the shop as you hand him your cash.;)

Depends if you value small improvements highly or not. It's all to do with diminishing returns. A £1000 lens will feel nicer, be better built, will last longer but if you are not printing massive photos or pixel peeping the differences won't be astronomical compared to a £500 lens. That's my observation anyway.

I think I just need to take more time shooting with what I have and see where it's limit's are.

Now that's the most sensible thing you can do if you stick to it - take a year or two and at the same time expand YOUR limits - something the most expensive glass in the world can't do for you.

So far my only limits with my glass I can see are slow max apature of around f4-f5.6.

(aperture)

So stick your ISO much higher and learn about NR.

Simples!

Thanks for the advice. Think I just need to get out there and use my camera in anger and see what I can achieve with what i have before I think about replacing it. sorry about the spelling on my phone.

getting married works pretty well - you'll still want the new gear but you'll have no money to buy it with  plus you'll have a 'consience' who can list all the thing that are more important than shiny kit when ever you get the urge to splash out ;)

Marriage didn't stop me...I just get items delivered to work and used the old, "Darling, I've had [insert item] for ages and you've seen it before, honest!".

:D

Buy what you want. End of problem.

As long as you can afford it........

If the camera is sat there and you're not using it / wanting it then why not sell it and buy the UWA - the D3000 is sat there doing nothing

I went down a similar route with an UWA, do I want one / need one etc etc. Bit the bullet and bought a Sigma 10-20mm and it's great, I love how much more you can get in the shot. I don't use mine a lot, so it wasn't worth the extra money to buy the Canon UWA

Hope your itch thats needs itching will get scratched soon :D

Then to really drive the nail into the coffin, get a couple of children:lol: , now there's a drain on the cash flow no matter how much you make ( especially when you hear them say - Dad I want to [ go to uni | get married | get a car | buy a D4 ]
pick one or more :(

It's getting very tempting now to have a good scratch and trade in my D3000,18-55 and the 55-200 for a UWA. Tempted to go for the Sigma version based on amount of use it will get but then it depends how much value is given for the body and lens might even stretch to the Nikon 10-24!

I was hoping more people would discourage me but it appears more want to encourage me :bonk:

The best way to stop you WANTING new glass is to buy it, then you'll no nonger want it. The major problem with that is that you will have a very empty bank account after a while but you'll have a great setup.
Unfortunately, I had the same problem for a while and have to resort to selling my least used lenses to fund new ones. Although I only want one more lens for now and I'll be very happy with my kit.

I know someone who takes a slightly different approach to this. His wife only ever sees one big white lens at any one time ... therefore there is only one big white lens. :D

I just gave in to it and have a fairly nice collection of lenses now that cover most occasions, I am half way there on my body collection but the desire to get closer to the subject always rears its head and I can't help but look at longer and more expenive peices of white lovelyness

New lens is more like you want it then you need it.

Usually a holy trinity lens will do me, but i just want more.

Wide Angle (18-35 or 10-20), Mid Range Zoom (24-70) and Tele zoom (70-200) is the lens i use the most. For prime i use 35mm and most likely 85mm (when i buy it).

Anything extra is more like a luxery lens to use .......

I would go along with whoever said getting married although chuck a few kids in too and BINGO...fast glass will be a fuzzy memory :o)

I too am having trouble... I need a new lens! I am married and can't really afford it, but soo want a Sigma 10-20mm or a Samyang 14mm.

As the mask would say 'Shomebody shtop me!'

Something like this is pretty much the setup I want to go for. Maybe a little more length on the midrange zoom with somthing like a 24-120 f4. and possibly the Tokina 11-16 it seems to get very good reviews but a Sigma 10-20 will cost less and also narrow the gap to a midrange lens better.

Except if they are babies then:-
"Sorry Darling the lens I have isn't suitable. Why don't you go an buy a new one then  "
Buy new lens, use old one anyway.

Sell your camera gear and choose a different hobby!! :D

There's just no way around it. I'm like a moth to a light when I see the lenses for sale on here - they're just so beautiful!:D

I have an itch for a Canon 24-70 L 2.8 to replace my Tamron 17-50. The only thing stopping me is the misses :D

I know if I had a different hobby I would be the same with that!

I think I have managed to talk myself out of any upgrading anytime soon and just get hold of a UWA as I tend to do all my shooting in good light so not having f2.8 isn't going to pose a problem so far. But then a 70-200 f2.8 with a 1.4x teleconvertor seems tempting still.

The even more worrying thing is I keep looking at the Canon range of lens and have decided that a 17-40f4L 70-200 f4L IS and a 50mm f1.8 II would probably satisfy my needs specially if I went FF.

Why can't the Nikon equivalents be so well priced :(
