camera is pretty simple... any dslr will do...

then a lens... usually a wide angle...

but the key thing with these is the flash use... usually a hotshoe flash held off camera, with rear curtain sync, this should give you the sharp well lit people, whilst still maintaining the atmostpheric lighting... however the balence between flash and ambient light, is tricky to get right...

Its really simple, I use it if I cover small hardcore/metal gigs that have poor lighting. All you need to do is.. Use a long shutter speed, aperture to suit how much ambient light you would like, then use your flash on manual and play around with the settings as it depends on where you are and how close your subjects are. Snap, then move the camera whilst the shutter is open to have your trailing lines whilst the flash freezes the subject. Hope this helps...

Oh any Slr camera, a flash and a finger to press the button ;)

ok cool thanks :)

but i actually dont have a clue about cameras so i take it as silly as this sounds i cant do it with a ordinary digital cam? lol :)

No its not silly... If you have a camera with a night mode, usually it has a picture of a moon and a persons head.. that keeps the shutter open longer i think and uses flash..but dont quote me on it

On my D300, near the button to release the built in flash is another button..

Turn on the camera, press the other button and a scroll wheel takes you through the options. mine is the rear thumb wheel. Set it to Rear.. Built in or one on the hot shoe, even if flash gun is off camera it will work.
I believe this setting will allow motion blur on say a moving walkway, but keeping your subject sharp. Feel free to correct me on that..

Welcome to TP :)

You don't need anything special in terms of equipment. Those pictures could have been taken on a compact if you know how to set it. It's just a question of using a long shutter speed to balance the ambient background light with flash for the foregound, known as slow-sync flash or 'dragging the shutter'.

You don't need second curtain sync either. In fact, there are some good reasons why you shouldn't use it although mostly it won't do any harm.
