Hi Guys and Gals,

Whilst looking around for some inspiration I was struck by this image. The use of selective colours and the depth of field not to mention the clarity of it all but what processes in CS4 can I use to achieve a look like this?

Thanks for any help

Please don't label my images "dragan". They arent. Thank you.

Sorry, nearest thing I could find for effect.

I will press the RTM button though, as there appears to me 2 accounts, yours and the OP suspiciosly looks the same person? LJ/Lost Jordan, real nane LJ?:p

I'm a bit confused here? The OP is LostJordan with real name 'LJ' and you are 'LJ?' Who's who, or who, if anyone, has double user accounts???

Edit: Nigel got in before me!

Some sort of Plonker I reckon Derek!;)

Will say LJ, if it helps your ego, I genuinely like your pics, shame you had to be 2 people to hear it I guess.

i think its a seperate person chaps, so reign in the horses. If it IS the same person, they are a bit dim to use the same name...

Perhaps after your suspension you will share?

Matty - The OP linked to what appears to be his own Flickr account and then asked how to achieve the look? That's not too bright either...

If that's so it's one helluva of a coincidence don't ya think?

If you look at "LJ's" previous posts you will also see that he mentions the "dragan" effect (that I've never heard of until this evening...)

Plus Lostjordon lists his/her first name as LJ in the profile, it would be a heck of a coincidence, although stranger things have happened.

sorry guys, but its 2 different people, 2 different IP addresses, no matches at all. The OP has seen the images and asked the processing, the picture owner has the hump at the suggestion of a filter in use and the rest of you have jumped to conclusions.

Seperate IP addresses
Contact Us from one of them

I'll keep looking but I dont think its the same person.

I looked at the rest of your photo stream and the work is truly outstanding. You could bring a lot of fresh input to this forum that could only be positive

It starts off with great lighting and a cracking job done in camera

perhaps we need a new forum...

"found work" - a place where members can provide links to superb work out there. The benefit would be 2 fold - we all get to see great inspitational work, and secondly, it might encourage some excellent creative photographers into the fold

I'm learning..... it can be rough in here. Ouch. :boxer:

Honestly chaps... I'm not the ego maniac you paint me to be. I check my stats on flickr to see where the hits come from..which is how I came across this thread. I don't have two accounts here and I didn't start this topic. I post images to flickr....if people like them, great, if not I'm ok with that too. People know where I am if they want to see my stuff.

Having said that it's a bit too easy to suggest that I follow a specific process. I don't. What I do always try to do 1st is underexpose a little in camera. My whole stream is about shadows and light and I've always found it darn near impossible to post process a shadow where there isn't one. So... 1st rule of my images is underexposure.

I work with textures. It takes a lot of practice to blend them correctly to make the most of their own luminosity. Do it right and you get a very pleasing result.

My biggest tool in post is dodge and burn. Know how (dodging shadows..then midtones etc) and more importantly know where. Dodge and burn for an overall atmosphere. It takes time and patience but if you like the look I get....that is how its achieved. It's how its always been done..right back to the film days. Dodge and burn is an art all of its own.

There would be no point doing any of the above if you didn't have the shot in the first place. I'm primarily a portrait guy and always look to capture some form of emotion. 99% of the shots you see on my flickr stream are street portraits too. Complete strangers and certainly no studio set up's.

If you would like to know more...just ask. Thanks.

A clearer example of texture work and dodge and burn might be this one...

This was taken on Portobello Road. She was sat waiting for the market to clear in an old Ford Capri and I just knew she would say no if I asked for the portrait. I therefore sneaked behind her into her blind spot and got the shot you see. The atmosphere has been developed with the texture and the emphasis on her with dodge and burn.

Awesome shot!

My dodge and burn is shocking, but then i never use it so it's not going to improve any time soon.

Nice shot Lee.

My apologies to the OP and LJ. As said it was a big coincidence.

LJ, also as I said, I genuinely like your pictures..they are truly inspirational.

I mentioned the Dragan effect in reply to the OP (just trying to be helpful) as that was the nearest effect/style I could find.

Yup, sincere apologies, even though I still don't understand it! :D

Images are truly great, and must be a lot of PP work involved - very consistent also, which is sometimes the hardest part.

Totally agree

Very emotive (and amazing) images LJ.

love your work
do you blend in the cracked paint effect on a layer mask?

It's a label. It's too easy to label something this or that. My style is something that has evolved as I became more competent and I feel it's the artistic interpretation of an image that should truly be appreciated. Merely stating "dragan" misses the point completely. I invest on an emotional level and if that is evident at all, you have to agree there is so much more than one single "process" at work.

Take this frame for instance....

http://www.flickr.com/photos/16536699@N07/5107081466/

These are genuine moments. Street shots. Situations where I have been completely accepted by the subject. Truly emotional for me and hopefully for the viewer too. If I was to label my work with anything, I would simply use the word evocative. It gives the whole "process" of capture through to end image the emotional credit it deserves. I hope that makes sense Pete.

Yes but if Nigel had described your style as evocative to the OP, it wouldnt have helped him in the slightest as far as pointing him in the right direction. Most people here dont know how your look was achieved, so the best they can do is to compare it to something that is well known, in this case Dragan.

If people are missing the point, then who cares?, the OP and others wanted to know what PP was used, not what your life's mission is. This is a PP forum not an Art forum.

Dont get me wrong, your stuff's great, but y'know, taking yourself too seriously just makes life difficult for yourself.

it's easy to have two different IP's, you just need a VPN.

Not saying thats what's happened here, but just saying. it's possible to do that if needed.

Also, really like the old woman shot!

Fair point, if you put a lot of effort into your style it must grind to be compared to somebody else.

Many here would say that photography is art and, maybe, a bit of gravitas amongst the banter of this forum is no bad thing.

You don't even need that if you have BT, just log on to openzone, that gives a different IP.

i agree on both counts Pete, but im just saying that as an artist you've got to be careful about how you react to what other people say. People wont generally talk about an artists work with the same consideration or sensibility as the artist would. I just think as an artist you have to accept the behavior of others and not let if get to you. LJ came on here because he felt people were; or could possibly - 'miss the point' on what his work is about. But surely its up to the viewer to decide whether they 'get it' or whether they like it enough to even consider what it might mean. An artist shouldnt have to seek out threads and such just to check and see if people are saying the 'right' things about his/her work.

Truly outstanding images LJ

Art and technique in perfect harmony

Bailey, Hockney, Hepworth and several other of Britain's best artists would fundamentally disagree with most of what you've said there, and that's just one generation!

Cracking images LJ.
