But are lens such as Canon and Nikon actually made in conditions such as this today, I would have thought it would be more technical and clinical rather than this which looks a bit primitive and dated.

Good lord no, if they made nifty fifty lenses that way they would cost thousands each.

I had to laugh at the very careful cleaning and inspecting of each lens element, place it carefully, then dump a bit of card over the top! it didn't look much like a dust free room with their hair floating free.
