How buying a 1D Mark IV could save me £1800 (or the 1DIV purchase thread)

Using special "man-logic", I have worked out that purchasing a new 1D Mark IV could save me £1800.

A 1DIV will cost approx £4500, which should drop after launch, but say I get one on launch day. It has 16mp versus my 1DIII's 10mp. The additional resolution will enable me to crop in tighter to my photos so I could get down to a cropped resolution of 10mp and have the same resolution as my 1DIII.

Therefore, I dont need to buy a 400 2.8 costing £6300, thus saving £1800. I can still use my 300 2.8 and get better "reach" which will be pretty much equivalent to using a 400 2.8 on a 1DIII. Most sports photographers use a 400 2.8 as their standard lens of choice, with a second body carrying a 70-200.

Of course, if the 1DIV drops in price after launch which is surely will, the saving becomes even larger.

Great news for us all!

Is that the reasoning you plan to use on the wifey?

...i likes it! :D

Lol. Does that mean a 5DII would save you even more?

Thats the theory I had re no longer needing a 400... also you can pre order at £3,700 NOW!

Just a shame theres no point buying one for footblal league yet... see other thread re video :(

So in theory using your Logic you could save fortunes getting a 7D instead...... Bigger crop sensor more mega pixels... so win win win...

I have emailed your wife for you.... bet you are well pleased I stepped in there ;)

Great minds think alike.

I cant a ban on the camera per-se continuing somehow. I reckon all the big sports bodies will do is just ensure the "contract" for accreditation bans use of video imagery for photographers in the same way as it bans you or me putting together a nice calendar and selling it down the market. I'm sure no sensible sports photographer is going to risk their accreditation by chucking some video out on the internet.

£3,700 is dead cheap (relatively!!!) - where is that?

Oh - and the wife wont notice - it looks just like the 1DIII. As long as she doesn't see that there are two of them then I'm OK.

A 7D wont cut it I dont think. The high ISO performance isn't quite up to the 1DIII but I have had a good think about it! I would like to borrow one for a floodlit game to do a real side-by-side comparison though.

I spoke to Derek Jonson of DataCO last week.. he phoned me up when I emailed him about the MK4... He said they are "looking into it" and they havent decided either way.. Theres a possbility they could ban it :(

Right now though its not banned and I think everyones waiting for the IOC (olympic committee) to decide as they are reviewing the situation... However I believe the next nikon has video .. Common sense says they would do as you say.. just keep it in the licence..

1dmk4 delivery date 16th Dec :)

I totally agree with your logic and applaud you putting so much thought into the purchase, I'm sure your wife will be happy that you have done some work and not just rushed out for one on a whim!! Perhaps you could help me with the same sort of dilemma as I would love to have the MkIV but I do not need any more lenses and have a budget of £1400 maximum until next summer - how do I find the rest or do I have to "make do" with a MkIII until then

All these nice new cameras that are due to arrive are at least pushing the value of the MkIII down now so please buy 2 of them and help me that way

Now thats my sort of thinking, i really dont see why women dont understand that sort of logic!!

I recommend the Capital One zero percent interest credit card for precisely this situation .

Close!! I do have a Capital One card but its not 0% interest and I don't want to get another one just in case I get tempted  The MkIII's are +/- £1400 and still dropping on ebay so I will get one of them for the winter and let all you early adopters sort out any niggles before I buy one - thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it, at least I am until I see the pictures it produces real time

I know someone who had a similar idea .... She only ever sees one big white lens at any one time. Therefore there is only one big white lens .....

I reckon I'll call it "Gordon Brown" logic. It goes something like this:

"Look, I was going to spend £780bn but I've decided to to only spend £720bn so I've saved £60bn and am therefore the best financial wizard in the world. I can now spend that £60bn on some other stupid wasteful scheme. All cower before my god-like financial ability." etc etc etc...

I love it when people just step back for a moment and work things out properly, have a pat on the back Tobers ;) Oh I can save you the cost of selling your old camera by just popping it into a jiffy bag and posting it to me and I will even pick up the cost of postage for you. ;)

So the saving of £1800 can go towards a new car right? :D

Whenever I say I saved money the missus always takes that as the cue to drag me round some home furnishings department with the 'money saved', so I always pay retail now (yeah, right) :D

My logic of spending money on expensive camera stuff is that I tell myself I will eventually get one, so why get the in between lens/cameras now and just go for the one later.

i.e. get the 85/1.2, don't waste £300 on the 1.8 version ! :p

p.s. I don't have an 85/1.2....yet

It that after she changed the locks, thrown his clothes out the bedroom window and currently only allow to see the children at weekends :D

The 400 2.8's lens hood is so big you could at least live in it instead :D

Imagine what it could be like though if you got the 400mm AND the mkIV, because lets be honest, thats what will happen eventually so you can have a 16mp 400mm shot ;)

But bravo on the logic, i need to use this one when buying lenses :)

That sounds more like women's logic. i.e. If I buy this dress and this hat in the sale, I can save £xxxx. Therefore, I can afford the matching handbag too.... and the shoes.

Steve.

Now I like your thinking there...

Just to throw something into the mix... wouldn't you be selling the 300 to fund a 400 though?

If not... I'll keep my trap shut

Hmmm...good point. Hadn't thought about that particular avenue.

1DIV's arriving in big UK retailers on Friday 18th Dec apparently.

The place i was monitoring said 16th dec ...Just double checked and they now say 7th january .. hmmm

I've also got my eyes on the 1D Mark IV... so the date was pushed back to the 7th of January now?

Seems a bit too good to be true - is that site legit? Have you bought from them before?

Nope but they advertise at bottom that you can go to the shop and try it out... that swung it for me..

I wont work like that trust me.
I had 2 1DMKIIN's and got myself a IDSMKII i found that file sizes are just to big for my line of work. So went out and got 2 EOS 1DMKIII's on release and sold the MKIIN's, I still have the 1DSMKII with less then 6000 actions. I just dont need the file size so save your money and dont kid yourself you need it. Or buy my mint 1DSMKII at less then half the price of the MK1V, As its only a 1DSMKII with a new name anyway.

Sorry but ...what?

It's just hard to believe that they can sell it for so low.... they must be importing it from North America or Hong Kong...

At Calumet it's going for 4499.00.... which seems to be the average price.

I found that really funny... sorry hahaha

Never mind, ignore my last post.... it's not less than 4k... i was thinking about the D3S

Better ISO
Screen size
Sensor cleaning
Thats it aint it.

Got sensor cleaning on my mkIII

Higher MP and better ISO makes it worth the money for me.. Higher MP does give me better reach ... But to be honest I was hooked wiht the ISO
