Hey,

So, I've got some real inspiration from on this site and am looking at getting a little home studio set up.....

But before I get into which one etc..

How much room do I sensibly need?

I'm thinking full body shots.....probably 2 heads...

SO how much room as a minimum? I have a spare room but think this is going to be more of a sitting room packaway type set up...

Any help would be great..thanks!

Bigger is better. The more room you have the more you have to play with. Plus the longer the room is length ways means that you can use a normal prime lens such as a 50mm or 85mm which is idea for portraits as with using wide angles you sometimes get distortion.

The amount of space you have will affect the range of photography you can carry out and it's also easier to get good results in a larger space, but won't affect it's quality.

If you want to use lit backgrounds then you really need about 8' minimum between subject and background. If you're not lighting the background then you don't need any space at all.

Ideally, you should use a slight telephoto effect (say a 50mm lens with a cropped-sensor DSLR) but you can manage with a wideangle if you really need to. Obviously, the longer the lens the more space you'll need.

Then you have height to think about. 8' is OK for people sitting down, more height is needed for light placement if people are standing or if you want to take shots looking up

Right cool, I have 21.5ft x 13.6ft room but only 7.8ft height(I dont use feet so those decimals will have to suffice )

So looks like I'm going to struggle on the height front...

I planned on using my 50 1.4 as a starting block...

Room size sounds great but i agree for a full body shot you will be slightly limited by height. remember that when your model stands up, the position of the light is important and you would generally want your light coming from above so height will restrict your light position

hhmmm I need to have a good think about the exact type of photography i'm going to be doing....

I think standard portraits defo but I also think I will dabble a fair bit in sans clothes...if you get me...

I could always use models that are short...:bonk:
