How big is yours?

Bigger is definitely better. Look at the Lencarta white 70cm dish with diffusion material included. It's by far the best value for quality out there.

There are others, but not that many available at that size in white, and I find the white far more suitable for my requirements. Plus you get a free diffusion sock too.
A silver BD can cause the grid to be reflected and therefore visible on the subject if the subject has a shiny or reflective surface etc.

+1 for Lencarta 70cm white beauty dish with diffusion sock. Used it a lot on Christmas day! Well woth getting the larger size for that wrap around soft lighting.

Yeah, having looked at results, I much prefer the white rather than silver, same as my umbrellas, the silver ones are too harsh for my liking.

Decision made, will order one tomorrow :-)
Next question.... Is the honeycomb a necessity or something that will only get used on rare occasions, isn't the dish quite directional anyway? I have snoots and grids on softboxes, I just don't want to spend the extra 50 odd quid unless necessary

The grid makes a definite difference, but get the dish first and the grid when you're ready. Lencarta don't charge for postage, so it's not as if you'll end up paying more for a separate order at a later date.

Thanks Mike,

Good advice, shame the car tax is due this month :-)

Have fun with it Chris. Don't forget to vary the position of the light as it can make quite a difference to the image, but the overall light is great. Good start for the New Year.

Ahh...
The website always says 'processing'.
There seems to be a problem with courier collections, I tried to arrange a collection today and the Interlink website said that 'collection isn't available on the requested date' which I'm guessing means that they haven't returned to work yet.

I'll find out and get back to you.

Cheers Garry, much appreciated

still no sign of it, and the money has left my account.... fingers crossed for tomorrow

I’m very sorry, but the only orders that we’ve been able to send this week have been small items that we have been able to send via Royal Mail.

The reason for this is that our courier service, Interlink, doesn’t seem to have returned to work, and didn’t even tell us that they were enjoying a long holiday:bang:

As I haven’t been able to contact them by phone either I’m just playing guessing games here, but at worst case options it looks like a Wednesday delivery.

Regards,

Garry

Thanks Garry.

The 70cm Lencarta dish fits very snugly into the rear seat of a car, facing backwards and belted in.
Mine tends to go on all my location shoots.

white beauty dishes are the way forward :)

one photographer I assist uses a (slightly) customised drum case. Says it cost him about £25.

I did think of having a go at making my own, I've collected a huge bowl, just never got round to it. I did make a large strip light, that works well, just need to figure out how to make a grid now and I'm happy :-)

sorry, he uses a drum case as a flight case for his BD, not as a beauty dish itself.

the beauty dish has finally arrived, has anyone else found the fit to be extremely tight? My heads are s fit, and all my other gear fits with no effort, but really struggled to get this on. Had to put the dish on the floor and push the head onto it. quite worried about taking it off, thinking I will remove the modelling bulb first so I don't break it

It shouldn't be slack, but shouldn't be too tight either. ALWAYS fit/remove by putting it on the floor and fitting/removing the head, NEVER try to put it onto the head - that goes for softboxes too

Thanks Garry, this definitely falls in the too tight category. maybe when I've managed to remove it I will see where it's binding and get a sander on it
